A novel antibiotic substance, Scopularin, is prepared by cultivation of a strain of the microorganism, Scopulariopsis, A.T.C.C. No. 20,914. This compound and its alcohol derivative have also been found to have cytochrome P450 inhibition activity.

Novel antibiotic substances, including novel natural products, having the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are as defined herein, are disclosed. These compounds have been found to be cytochrome P450 inhibitors.

4-methoxy-5-methyl-pyran-3-ol natural products and derivatives thereof

Derivatives of antibiotics derived from the microorganism Streptomyces lydicus subspecies tanzanius, referred to as antibiotics LL-E19020 alpha and beta, are produced by chemical reaction. The derivatives are also active antibiotics useful in the treatment of bacterial infections.
