An electrically-controlled camshaft phaser with a gearbox assembly, including a sun gear having outwardly-facing gear teeth; at least one planet gear, having outwardly-facing gear teeth, that moves radially relative to an axis of sun gear rotation; at least one pin that carries the planet gear; and a deformable outer ring, carried by the sun gear, that engages the planet gear and moves the planet gear radially toward a ring gear.

An engine variable camshaft timing (VCT) phaser assembly is equipped in an internal combustion engine (ICE) to adjust the rotation of the engine's camshaft relative to the engine's crankshaft. The adjustments advance and retard the opening and closing movements of the engine's intake and exhaust valves. An electric motor and a planetary gear set work together amid use of the VCT phaser assembly. The planetary gear set can include two or more ring gears, planet gears, and a sun gear. A backlash condition sometimes experienced in previous VCTs is minimized in the VCT phaser assembly by one or more springs that urge the planet gears into engagement with the ring gears.

A hydrostatic camshaft phaser system includes a hydraulically-actuated camshaft phaser with a rotor; and a stator housing that receives the rotor and includes an advancing chamber and a retarding chamber defined at least partially by the vane; and a variable displacement pump, in fluid communication with the hydraulically-actuated camshaft phaser, comprising a first chamber in fluid communication with the advancing chamber and a second chamber in fluid communication with the retarding chamber; the first chamber receives fluid from a first non-continuous groove extending along a camshaft surface or a bearing surface and the second chamber receives fluid from a second non-continuous groove extending along the camshaft surface or the bearing surface during a first portion of camshaft rotation, and the first chamber receives fluid from the second non-continuous groove and the second chamber receives fluid from the first non-continuous groove during a second portion of camshaft rotation.
