A system and method for manufacturing that provides for adjustable support of work pieces such as printed circuit boards includes an edge rail system having first and second edge rails, with at least one of the edge rails being adjustable, allowing the width of the system to be adjusted to accommodate various widths of work pieces. It also includes a set of support strips for supporting a lower side of the work pieces and a means for dynamically adjusting spacing of support strips to adjust to the width of the edge rail system.

Adjustable support tooling apparatus

An improved vacuum box assembly for use in printed circuit board manufacturing where the printed circuit board is supported during manufacturing operations on the second side of the board. The vacuum box uses a unique and improved side plate that securely retains commercially available substrate support devices within the vacuum box. The side plate has a retention cavity configured to receive one or more substrate support devices therein. The side plate retains the substrate support device in a desired position. Open or unoccupied regions of the retention cavity may be sealed by use of specifically configured vacuum blocking plates.

Apparatus for assembling printed circuit boards

An improved substrate support system for clamping spring loaded pins that support substrates, such as printed circuit boards, which have even profiles, and uneven profiles due to components being installed on one side during manufacturing operations to the opposite side of the substrate. The substrate support system can utilize a cam lever, a knob, or a draw latch to move a clamping plate between an aligned position and a clamping position.

Substrate support system

An adjustable tooling pin assembly for precisely positioning printed circuit boards having different diameter and spacing of tooling alignment holes with different series of boards. Two support bodies are positioned along a base at the approximate location of spaced tooling holes. One support body carries an upwardly extending tooling pin with a diameter smaller than the tooling hole. The other support body carries two upwardly extending, adjacent, thin tooling pins, one of which is fixed to the support body and the other fastened to a block slidable in a channel in the support body, to move the movable pin relative to the fixed pin. The board holes are placed over the pins, the support bodies are secured to the base with the outermost tooling pins engaging the outer hole edges. The movable pin is moved away from the adjacent fixed pin by rotating a threaded rod extending though the support block to move the movable pin into contact with the tool hole edge opposite the fixed pin edge. The movable pin is secured against further movement by a setscrew. Desired operations, such as placement of electronic components on the board, are conducted, then the board is removed. The board is removed and replaced by a series of boards having the same tooling holes for further operations.

Adjustable tooling pins

An apparatus for supporting a substrate such as a printed circuit board (PCB) having various electronic components installed on one side with that side down so that other components can be installed on the opposite side. An assembly of three perforated plates has deformable, typically rubber-like, pins projecting through the perforations. Springs below the assembly bias the pins to a position extending above the plate. When a PCB is laid on the pins with mounted electronic components downward, the components with pres the pins down distances corresponding to component thickness. The pins provide uniform support while working on the opposite side. The center perforated plate of the three is moved to the side, clamping the pins in position, so that the PCB can be removed and replaced with another identical PCB. Different devices for causing the plate clamping action and devices for indexing PCB position and for maintaining the PCB flat and level are also provided.

A kit tools for use in repairing bent leads on fine pitch surface mount electronic components and a method of repairing such bent leads. The kit basically comprises a plate having a precisely flat surface and a template having a plurality of recesses corresponding to the lead pattern on a component to be repaired. The template is secured to the plate surface, such as by tape extending across tabs extending from the template. A means such as a vacuum pen is used to lift and move the component without touching the leads. A variety of probes, tweezers and the like are used to bend leads back to proper positions. The component may be placed directly against the surface when checking and correcting lack of lead coplanarity and linearity. Grossly bent leads may be corrected with the component on the surface, while precise positioning is accomplished with the component in the template, since fine adjustments can be made and the minor non-alignment can be easily observed and corrected.

Fine pitch electronic component lead straightening method and appratus

A method and kit for precisely placing fine pitch surface-mount electronic components onto printed circuit boards. An alignment substrate having a pattern of solder pads and holes or transverse edges corresponding to the pattern of solder pads and holes or edges on a printed circuit board is secured to a base by registration pins fastened to the base and inserted into contact with said holes or edges. Generally, the alignment substrate is preferably another circuit board identical with the board to be bonded to the electrical component. A template having a pattern of recesses corresponding to the component lead pattern is secured over the alignment substrate. A component is placed on the template with leads in the recesses. The component is lifted away, a printed circuit board is placed over the template and the component is lower onto the board. The board with component in place can then be removed for soldering.
