A system, method, and apparatus are provided for estimating a flux of fugitive gas emissions. The method is performed using a gas analyzer coupled to a sampling wand, where gas enters the inlet tip of the sampling wand prior to being sampled by the gas analyzer. The sampling wand is fixed to a mobile device that includes an inertial measurement unit. Location information from the inertial measurement unit is used to compile a high resolution geo-spatial map of gas concentration levels across a cross-sectional area of a gas plume. A near-field Gaussian plume inversion calculation is then performed to estimate the flux based on the gas concentration data and the location information.

Method for estimating flux using handheld gas sensors and an inertial measurement unit

A cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS) system is provided that utilizes collimators the incorporate gradient index (GRIN) lenses in lieu of conventional spherical or aspheric refractive lenses. The use of smaller diameter GRIN lenses facilitates a reduced initial beam size entering the sample cavity, which reduces self-interference noise and increases a signal to noise ratio of the measurements. Further, a reduced size and mass of the GRIN lens can reduce a size of the mounting hardware utilized to mount the optical components, which enables more laser beams to be coupled to a single gas cell compared to a similar gas cell integrated with conventional refractive collimators. A larger number of lasers enables more gas peaks to be measured substantially simultaneously using the CEAS system.

Technologies for producing efficient investigation routes for identifying gas leak locations include a mobile compute device. The mobile compute device includes circuitry configured to obtain route data indicative of a route to be traveled along to identify a location of a gas leak. Systems and methods for efficiently identifying gas leak locations may include traversing, by an investigator and within a search area in which a gas leak has been indicated, a route defined according to at least one of a surge-cast algorithm or a surge-spiral algorithm. The systems and methods may also include sampling, with a gas detection device carried by the investigator, an environment along the route to identify a location of the gas leak.

Systems and methods for efficiently identifying gas leak locations

A method for spectral interpretation in absorption spectroscopy uses a nonlinear spectral fitting algorithm for interpretation of spectral features in complex absorption spectra. The algorithm combines two spectral modeling techniques for generating spectral models to be used in the curve fitting process: a line-shape model and a basis-set model. The selected models for all gas components are additively combined using a least squares minimization, allowing for quantification of multiple species simultaneously.

Spectral modeling for complex absorption spectrum interpretation

Biological fluid samples containing proteins (e.g., blood plasma or saliva) are prepared for isotopic analysis by precipitating the proteins while leaving the isotopic ratio unaffected. This precipitation can involve adding metal ions, salts, organic solvents, or organic polymers. The sample is then centrifuged to allow transfer of the supernatant for isotopic analysis, e.g. by tunable diode laser absorption spectrometry to obtain a quantitative measure of theH andO isotope levels in the water relative to reference standards.

A tunable mid-infrared laser operated in a pulsed mode is coupled off-axis into a high-finesse optical cavity to produce a long-path spectrometer. The cavity receives a gas sample. Laser pulses may be wavelength-scanned by stepping an external grating, allowing the grating to mechanically settle, then measuring the ring-down with a set of laser pulses, before moving on the next wavelength. A detector receiving infrared light exiting the cavity supplies a cavity ring-down trace representative of sample absorption of the infrared pulses. A processor determines an absolute absorption spectrum of the gas sample from the ring-down trace and analyzes sample gas composition and trace concentration from that spectrum. The absorption baseline is highly reproducible and stable, improving the accuracy of multivariate fits, and the spectral resolution can be better than 0.001 cm(contingent upon the laser source), allowing for high-resolution measurements of sharp absorption features.

A method of measuring energy expenditure in a living subject comprises: (a) administering a specified dose of doubly-labeled water (HO) to a living subject; (b) obtaining samples at three or more times of body water from the living subject; (c) measuringH/H,O/O andO/O ratios in each of the obtained samples using optical spectroscopy; and (d) determining (1) a combined value of flux of body water and exhaled carbon dioxide from a change in measuredO/O over time, (2) a value of flux of body water alone from a change in measuredH/H over time, and (3) a reference value of isotopic background fluctuation from a change in measuredO/O over time. UsingO measurements to estimate background fluctuations of theH andO decreases the required isotope dosing of subjects or decreases uncertainty at current dosing levels.

A device includes a device for forming a gaseous flow from the sample and a device for separation of each specific gaseous constituent. The device also includes a device for quantifying the relative contents of the two isotopes to be analyzed which comprise an optical measurement cell. The cell includes two mirrors which delimit a measurement cavity. The device includes a device for introducing an incident optical signal into the measurement cavity, a device for generating a plurality of reflections of the signal in separate points on each mirror during its travel in the cavity, a device for measuring a transmitted optical signal resulting from an interaction between the optical signal and each isotope in the measurement cavity, and a device for calculating the relative contents on the basis of these signals.

An incoherent cavity ringdown spectroscopy (iCRDS) gas analyzer is provided with a gas flow path to introduce a sample gas into an enclosed volume bounded by a pair of mirrors defining an optical cavity. A pulsed broadband incoherent light source with a wavelength band that coincides with an absorption band of a specified gas species to be detected (e.g., NO2 or SO3) directs pulses of light into the optical cavity, while a photodetector is positioned to detect light exiting the cavity. A scrubber in an alternate flow path into the enclosed volume periodically scrubs the sample gas of the specified gas species. A processor determines the concentration of the specified gas species from the ringdown decay time of the photodetector measurement signals, with the periodic scrubbing of the sample gas providing a calibration reference from its slower decay time.

This device includes a stage for forming a gaseous flow from the sample, and a column for separation by selective retention of each gaseous constituent. It includes an oven for combustion of the gaseous flow in order to form a gaseous residue from each constituent, and a quantification unit for quantifying the content of each constituent to be analyzed in the gaseous flow. The quantification unit includes an optical measurement cell connected to an oven, and a mirror for introducing a laser incident optical signal into the cell. The quantification unit also measures a transmitted optical signal resulting from an interaction between the optical signal and each gaseous residue in the cell, and calculates the content on the basis of the transmitted optical signal.

An absorption spectroscopy instrument is provided with a re-injection mirror to greatly increase the optical power coupled into an optical cavity, comprised of two or more mirrors, for the purpose of increasing the quality of absorption and extinction measurements made in the cavity. Light reflected from the first cavity mirror upon which a light beam is incident, can be efficiently collected and back reflected onto the same mirror, effectively producing a plurality of optical injections into the cavity. The instrument can be used for off-axis cavity ringdown spectroscopy, off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy, or other cavity-based spectroscopy applications.

Absorption spectroscopy instrument with increased optical cavity power without resonant frequency build-up

The disclosure describes an absorption spectroscopy method for sensing hydrogen gas in a sample atmosphere and an associated hydrogen sensor. A light beam, having a wavelength corresponding to a vibrational transition of hydrogen molecules from a ground vibration state to any excited rotational vibration state via a quadrupole interaction, is introduced into an optical cavity adapted to receive a sample atmosphere to be tested for the presence of hydrogen gas. The light is introduced into the cavity in an off-axis alignment to systematically eliminate cavity resonances, while preserving the absorption signal amplifying properties of such cavities. Hydrogen absorption is measured is terms of cavity output, as in the ICOS technique.
