A longitudinally extending web of lofty nonwoven abrasive surface treatment material is provided in a coreless roll form to the end user. Successive wraps of the nonwoven abrasive material have interengaging surfaces sufficient to maintain the material in a spirally wrapped configuration yet being readily separable. A plurality of longitudinally spaced and laterally disposed perforations through the web permit the user to successively separate the web into a plurality of sheets of abrasive surface treatment material. In a preferred embodiment, the roll is encased in a protective shrink wrap sheath, and each sheet is separated from the roll by separating said sheet from an innermost wrap of the roll. In another preferred embodiment, the abrasive surface treatment material includes abrasive particles of 1000 grade or finer.

Nonwoven abrasive material roll

An abrasive article and methods for making such abrasive articles, including coated and nonwoven abrasive articles, comprising (a) a plurality of abrasive particles and (b) a bond system which adheres the plurality of abrasive particles together, the bond system comprising a binder; the binder being formed from a binder precursor essentially free of organic solvent, the binder precursor comprising a blend of an urea-aldehyde resin and a water dilutable resole phenolic resin, the blend being catalyzed by an acid catalyst system and, in particular, a coated abrasive comprising (a) a backing having a major surface, (b) a plurality of abrasive particles, and (c) a bond system which adheres the plurality of abrasive particles to the major surface of the backing, the bond system comprising a binder; the binder being formed from a binder precursor comprising a blend of an urea-aldehyde resin and a water dilutable resole phenolic resin, the blend being catalyzed by an acid catalyst, wherein the blend comprises from about 5 to about 90 weight percent of the water dilutable resole phenolic resin and from about 95 to about 10 weight percent of the urea-aldehyde resin.

Abrasive articles and methods of making same

A method of preparing a coated abrasive article in which the presence of multiple layers of abrasive grains are minimized. In one variation, the method comprises the steps of: (a) providing a backing; (b) applying a make coat precursor to the backing; (c) partially curing the make coat precursor; (d) applying, preferably by projecting, a plurality of abrasive grains into the partially cured make coat precursor; and (e) completely curing the partially cured make coat precursor. In another variation of this method, a size coat precursor is applied over the abrasive grains and cured make coat, and the size coat precursor is completely cured. In another variation of this method, a size coat precursor is applied over the abrasive grains and the partially cured make coat precursor, and the make coat precursor and the size coat precursor are completely cured. The make coat precursor preferably comprises an unsaturated resin that polymerizes via a free radical polymerization mechanism at the site of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturation.

Method of making a coated abrasive article

Coated abrasive comprising a backing and abrasive grain adhered to said backing by means of a binder. The binder is prepared from a composition that is curable by free-radical polymerization. The composition contains abrasive grain suspended therein at the time the composition is coated onto the backing. The abrasive exhibits high endurance for extended periods of use.
