A vehicle system includes a power inverter coupled to an AC bus having a neutral conductor, a switching device coupled between the neutral conductor and a ground conductor, a sensor configured to measure an impedance between the neutral and ground conductors, and a control module. The power inverter is configured to provide AC power to an output via the AC bus. The control module is configured to transmit a signal to open the switching device to create a floating neutral configuration between the power inverter and the output, receive a signal from the sensor indicative of the impedance, and in response to the impedance between the neutral conductor and the ground conductor being less than or equal to a threshold, transmit a signal to the power inverter to provide AC power to the output. Other example vehicle systems and control methods are also disclosed.

On-board vehicle inverter with selectable neutral bonding

A system for charging an electric vehicle in a facility includes a current sensor adapted to obtain an input current signal for a power source in the facility. An electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) is configured to charge the electric vehicle through the power source based at least partially on a control pilot signal. A controller has a processor and tangible, non-transitory memory on which instructions are recorded for dynamically adjusting the control pilot signal based on the input current signal. The control pilot signal is set to a predefined maximum when the input current signal is less than a main circuit breaker rating of the facility. The controller is configured to reduce the control pilot signal from the predefined maximum when the input current signal is at or above the main circuit breaker rating.

Dynamic load management for electric vehicle charging

A split-phase bidirectional on-board charger (OBC) has separate charging and discharging modes, and includes a switchgear block connectable to an offboard charging station during the charging mode, and to an external alternating current (AC) load during the discharging mode. The OBC includes first and second DC-AC converters connected to the switchgear block and DC-DC converter connected to the first and second DC-AC converters and a DC bus. During the charging mode, the DC-AC converters output a DC link voltage to the DC-DC converter. The DC-DC converter outputs a DC charging voltage or current to the DC bus when the link voltage reaches a predetermined value. During the discharging mode, the DC-AC converters receive a DC discharging voltage or current from the DC-DC converter and together selectively output a split-phase AC voltage through the switchgear block to the AC electrical load.

Split-phase bidirectional on-board charger

A controller of a host system executes a method for detecting an external AC electrical device. While an AC charging inlet of the host system is electrically connected to the device via different vehicle-to-live (V2L) and jump-charge connections, the controller detects a control pilot voltage and a proximity voltage. When the control pilot voltage is 0V, the controller determines whether entry conditions are satisfied indicative of a desire to offload power from the host system to the device. When the entry conditions are satisfied, the proximity or control pilot voltage are modulated to generate a modulated voltage signal, which the controller compares to an expected voltage indicative of the device. Power is offloaded to the device when the modulated voltage signal matches the expected voltage.

Host system with AC charging inlet and method for identifying an electrical device connected thereto

Disclosed are control algorithms and system architectures for arbitrating vehicle charging, e.g., for electric vehicles with rechargeable battery packs, wired and wireless charging capabilities, and control logic for governing such charging. A method is disclosed for managing charging of electrical storage units of motor vehicles at vehicle charging stations. The method includes determining if a wireless charging interface of the motor vehicle is available for wireless power transfer, and determining whether or not the vehicle charging station has an electrical connector coupled to a wired charging interface of the motor vehicle. Responsive to the charging station having an electrical connector coupled to the wired charging interface, the method initiates a wired (conductive) charge power mode. Conversely, if the wireless charging interface is available for power transfer and an electrical connector is not coupled to the wired charging interface, the method responsively initiates a wireless (inductive) charge power mode.

Vehicle architectures, electrical systems, and control algorithms for arbitrating vehicle charging

An electrical system for use with an AC power supply having multiple phase voltages, e.g., three phase voltages, may include a high-voltage battery pack or other high-voltage DC device, a 12 VDC battery or other auxiliary-voltage DC device providing auxiliary power to the electrical system, multiple AC-DC converters, and a controller. The AC-DC converters each provide a DC output voltage to the high-voltage DC device, and are operable for converting a respective one of the phase voltages from the AC power supply into the DC output voltage. The controller selectively disables the AC-DC converters in response to a detected predetermined operating condition to thereby reduce consumption of the auxiliary power within the electrical system. A vehicle may include a high-voltage DC battery pack, an auxiliary-voltage DC battery providing auxiliary power, an onboard charging module, a charging port, an auxiliary power module, an electric machine, and a controller.

Multiphase converter auxiliary power reduction

An electrical system connectable to an offboard power supply includes a battery pack, parallel DC-coupled conductive and inductive charging systems, and a controller. The controller initiates charging of the battery pack using analog low-voltage signals. A charging preference may prioritize charging via a designated one of the charging systems. Another electrical system includes a battery pack connected to a DC voltage bus, a charge coupler connectable to the offboard power supply to establish a plug-in charging connection, parallel DC-coupled conductive and inductive charging systems, and a controller. The controller commands charging using the analog low-voltage control signals, doing so via the conductive charging system when the charge coupler is plugged into the power supply and via the wireless charger when the charge coupler is not plugged into the power supply and the controller detects proximity of the system to the primary induction coil.
