A system and method for forecasting future retail performance are described herein. The system includes a storage device that stores a sales history database, a weather history database, and a weather forecast database. An analyzer determines the extent to which past retail performance of a plurality of products at a plurality of locations was affected by weather using the sales history database and the weather history database. A configurator, coupled to the analyzer, estimates expected future retail performance of the products at the stores for a plurality of future time periods using the weather forecast database and results produced by the analyzer. A graphical user interface, coupled to the analyzer and the configurator, enables users to view and manipulate results produced by the analyzer and the configurator to thereby forecast future retail performance of the products at the locations.

The system includes weather forecast, weather history, activities, advertisement and external information source databases. Also included in the system is a central processing planning server that is accessible via a plurality of internal and external workstations. The present invention is a graphical user interface (GUI) for use in an Executive Information System (EIS) for managerial planning applications that experience long-range weather impact. The EIS is referred to as a Long-range Executive Weather Information System (LEWIS.TM.). In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the LEWIS.TM. system is used to calculate and display to a user the impact of weather on retail planning applications. A computer-based Executive Information System (EIS) system for determining the impact of weather and other external and internal factors on the retail industry. Utilizing a multiple regression correlation technique in a predictive model, a correlation of weather variables with store information for specific locations and times is performed to quantify a weather impact model in terms of unit or dollar sales volume change, or any other commercially useful benchmark. The EIS system determines these relationships with location and time specificity. Using the relationship between historical weather and historical sales, the EIS system 'deweatherizes' the historical weather to create a normalized historical sales relative to weather based upon normal weather (the 30 year average). This deweatherized data may be used in conjunction with a user-provided managerial plan to produce a revised managerial plan. Alternatively, the revised plan can be 'weatherized' by the EIS system by applying forecasted weather to the weather impact model to generate a weather-modified managerial plan.
