A method for providing a waterborne, inorganic barrier coating to a polyolefin substrate is described. The method involves applying a primer composition containing a vinyl polymer, wherein at least 75% of the polymer repeat units contain side groups having hydroxyl moieties, to the substrate. This primer coating facilitates the application and binding of the subsequently applied barrier coating composition to the substrate.

Method of priming polyolefin articles for coating

A barrier-coated polyester film comprises a polyethylene terphthalate substrate, a primer composition containing a vinyl polymer wherein at least 75% of the polymer repeat units contain side groups having hydroxyl moieties, and a waterborne, inorganic barrier coating. Method of priming poly(ethylene terephthalate) articles for coating

A method and novel barrier coating solutions are provided for imparting improved vapor, gas or aroma permeability characteristics to a coated polymeric substrate. The method and solutions employ a lithium-potassium copolysilicate of the formula (Li.sub.2 O).sub.x (K.sub.2 O).sub.1-x (SiO.sub.2).sub.y. For the method, y is between 1 and 10, if x is less than 1; or y is greater than 4.6, if x is 1. For the novel coating solutions, y is greater than 4.6 if x is less than 1; or x is greater than 0.5 if y is between 1 and 10.

Lithium and potassium copolysilicate barrier coatings

A method for providing improved adhesion of a waterborne, inorganic barrier coating to polyolefin substrate is described. The method involves corona-treatment of the substrate and applying a barrier coating composition. The polyolefin substrate is coated with an acrylic primer layer and then an inorganic barrier layer of a copolysilicate of lithium and potassium is applied.

Method of coating pre-primed polyolefin films

A method for coating polymeric substrate articles with a barrier coating that imparts improved vapor, gas or aroma permeability characteristics to the coated substrate, without efflorescence or hazing of the dried coating. The method employs a lithium-potassium copolysilicate of the formula (L.sub.2 O).sub.x (K.sub.2 O).sub.1-x (SiO.sub.2).sub.y, wherein y is between 1 and 10, if x is less than 1; or y is greater than 4.6, if x is 1.
