A hybrid reflective/refractive HMD includes a structural frame, refractive optical lens elements, and optics housings coupled to the structural frame and positioned in front of a user's first and second eyes. Light-emitting visual sources and reflective optical surfaces are contained in the optics housings. Visual content is transmitted from light-emitting visual sources to the reflective optical surfaces. The visual content is reflected within the reflective optical surfaces at least four times without passing through a refractive optical lens element. The visual content is transmitted to the user's first eye or the user's second eye. Simultaneous with the transmission of the visual content to the user's first eye or the user's second eye, a real-world view of the outside surrounding environment is transmitted to the user's first eye or the user's second eye. The visual content is overlaid onto the real-world view of the outside surrounding environment.

Hybrid reflective/refractive head mounted display

A method for assembling a head mounted display includes providing a rigid structural frame, and forming an inner optical assembly by assembling optical components to the structural frame including at least one micro-display configured to generate an image, and at least one reflective optical component configured to direct the image to a user's eye. The method includes assembling an outer frame to the inner optical assembly to provide protection for the optical components and customization of the head-mounted display for the user.

An acoustic-absorber system incorporates a plurality of acoustic-baffle assemblies in cooperation with an acoustic cavity. Each acoustic-baffle assembly incorporates a plurality of nested fluted cups, wherein at least one fluted cup of a first type having at least one orifice at at least one radially-inwardly-extending grooved portion is interleaved with at least one fluted cup of a second type having at least one orifice at at least one radially-outwardly-extending ridged portion. Externally-generated soundwaves entering either from the inside of an innermost fluted cup, or from the outside of an outermost fluted cup, travel through the at least one orifice thereof, and along a circuitous path along the gaps between adjacent cups and through at least one orifice of each of other fluted cups from one gap to another, until finally propagating into the acoustic cavity through at least one orifice of the outermost, or innermost, fluted cup for subsequent additional attenuation by destructive interference from phase cancellation within the cavity.

A head mounted display device includes a structural frame arranged generally along a X-axis and a Y-axis for viewing along a Z-axis, the X, Y, and Z axes being mutually perpendicular. A micro-display is coupled to the structural frame, and configured to project visual content in a substantially forward direction along the Z-axis away from a user. A group of one or more optical elements with reflective optical surfaces is coupled to the structural frame and respectively positioned on a front side of the micro-display to reflectively guide a light ray bundle in a non-pupil forming optical path from the micro-display to a user's eye to provide an image to the user's eye such that the light rays of the light ray bundle entering the user's eye are essentially parallel to make the image visible to the user with varied positions of the user's pupil.

A continuously variable transmission includes a driving member rotating about a first axis, a driven member rotating about a second axis, and an intermediate member interposed between the driving and driven members and rotating about a third axis configured to intersect the first and second axes. The intermediate member transfers torque from the driving member to the driven member. A method for forming a torque transfer member includes providing a base structure, wrapping a needle assembly around the base structure such that the needles extend outwardly therefrom, and affixing the needle assembly to the base structure. A method of manufacturing a needle assembly includes forming a series of pockets on a side of a ribbon, organizing a series of needles into a series of pockets, and affixing the series of needles into the series of pockets.

A head mounted display device includes a structural frame arranged generally along a X-axis and a Y-axis for viewing along a Z-axis, the X, Y, and Z axes being mutually perpendicular. A micro-display is coupled to the structural frame, and configured to project visual content in a substantially forward direction along the Z-axis away from a user. A group of one or more optical elements with reflective optical surfaces is coupled to the structural frame and respectively positioned on a front side of the micro-display to reflectively guide a light ray bundle from the micro-display to a user's eye. A micro-display alignment mechanism is mounted to the structural frame and configured to align and control the reflectively guided light ray bundle from the micro-display to the user's eye by positioning the micro-display along the X and Z axes.

Disclosed is a primarily reflective-based head mounted display device, for displaying and viewing visual content from a visual display source, including a frame, at least one optics housing connected to said frame, wherein the optics housing and frame are configured such that the optics housing may be positioned at least partially in front of an eye of a user, and wherein the optics housing includes a light-emitting visual source disposed within the optics housing for projecting visual content, and a plurality of reflective optical surfaces in optical communication with the light-emitting visual source that are configured to reflect a projection of the visual content into the eye of the user.

A head mounted display device includes a structural frame arranged generally along a first axis and a second axis for viewing along a third axis, the first, second, and third axes being mutually perpendicular. The structural frame includes opposing upper and lower rims between which are defined left and right openings. Left and right micro-displays are coupled to the structural frame, and are configured to project visual content in a substantially forward direction along the third axis toward the left and right openings, respectively, and away from a user. Left and right optical elements are coupled to the structural frame and respectively positioned over the left and right openings and each include an at least partially reflective surface facing in a substantially rearward direction along the third axis. The structural frame maintains the optical elements in alignment to define an optical light path for reflectively guiding a light ray bundle from the micro-displays to a user's eyes.

A safety device for automotive vehicles (cars, buses and trucks) or rail locomotives. The device inhibits use of cellular telephones and other communication devices that run the risk of distracting a driver/operator while the vehicle is in motion. Several techniques for inhibiting use are described which can be used individually or in a complementary combinations. In one technique, a rapidly varying signal level is created local to the communication device. The variations exceed the operational limits of the system, thereby inhibiting communications. In another technique, the safety device emits radiation that interferes with the reception of signals by the communication device only within the interior of the vehicle and will not interfere with cell phones or wireless devises outside the automotive vehicle or rail locomotive. As another alternative, masking signals also may be generated to prevent signals sent by the communication device within the vehicle from being intelligible at receiving stations outside the vehicle.

A sound capturing method and device for use in making recordings having improved three-dimensional imagery during playback. Vibration information is detected from a body portion through the use of a crystal microphone for generating a first signal corresponding to a vibrational frequency of the body portion in response to a received sound wave. Direct sound information is detected from the body portion through the use of a condenser microphone affixed thereto at a second location for generating a second signal corresponding to a frequency of the received sound wave. The first and second locations are in proximity to one another such that a sound wave will reach each location at substantially the same time. Alternatively, the signals received at either location may be processed or time-delayed such that sound waves are recorded from each location at substantially the same time. The resultant first and second signals may be combined through the use of a mixer and then put into a conventional sound recording device.
