Apparatus () for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle () that has a side structure () and a roof () comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (). The inflatable device () is inflatable away from the vehicle roof () into a position between the side structure () of the vehicle () and a vehicle occupant (). The inflatable device () includes overlying panels (and) that are interconnected along at least a portion of a perimeter () of the inflatable device to define an inflatable volume of the inflatable device. The inflatable device () when inflated has a predetermined thickness measured between overlying points on the overlying panels (and) at a location where the head of an occupant may contact the inflatable device. An inflation fluid source () provides inflation fluid to the inflatable device () for inflating the inflatable device. The inflation fluid in the inflatable device () is pressurized to a predetermined pressure when the inflatable device is inflated. The predetermined pressure is determined as a function of the predetermined thickness of the inflatable device ().

Inflatable curtain

An inflator () for providing inflation fluid ( ) to inflate an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device () includes a container () storing the inflation fluid under pressure. The container () has an outlet passage () through which the inflation fluid flows from the container. A rupturable closure member () fixed to the container () blocks flow of inflation fluid through the passage (). A support () for the rupturable closure member () defines a chamber () adjacent the rupturable closure member (). The rupturable closure member () has a first portion () deformed into the chamber () by the pressure of the inflation fluid and a second ring-shaped portion () encircling the first portion (). An initiator () ruptures the closure member () when actuated by shearing the first portion () from the second portion ().

Inflator

An apparatus () for helping to protect a vehicle occupant includes an actuatable vehicle occupant protection device (), and a microelectromechanical (MEMS) device () energizable to cause actuation of the protection device. In one embodiment, the MEMS device () is an energizable fluid source for emitting a primary fluid for actuating an inflatable protection device (). The apparatus () may comprise a plurality of MEMS devices () individually actuatable to control inflation of the protection device.

An apparatus () for anticipating a crash event between a vehicle () and an object () comprises a source () of position information located remote from the vehicle () and operable for providing a vehicle position signal () indicating vehicle position. A vehicle speed sensor () is operable for sensing vehicle speed and for providing a vehicle speed signal indicating vehicle speed. A source () of object condition information is located remote from the vehicle () and is operable for providing an object path signal () indicating position and speed of the object (). A controller () is mounted on the vehicle () and is operable, in response to receiving the vehicle position signal and the vehicle speed signal (), for determining a vehicle path. The controller () is also operable, in response to receiving the object path signal (), for anticipating the crash event.

Method and apparatus for anticipating a vehicle crash event

A method includes the step providing an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device ( ) between the side structure ( ) of a vehicle ( ) and a vehicle occupant ( ). A thickness of the protection device ( ) is determined by measuring between overlying points on overlying panels ( and ) of the protection device at location where an occupant's head having a given mass may contact the device. A pressure is determined as a predetermined function of the thickness of the protection device ( ) and of a velocity at which the head may impact the protection device. The pressure has a magnitude sufficient to prevent a head having a given mass from striking the side structure ( ) through the thickness of the protection device ( ) when the head impacts the protection device at and below the velocity. An inflation fluid source ( ) is provided to inflate the protection device ( ) to at least the determined pressure.

A pretensioner ( ) tensions vehicle seat belt webbing ( ). The pretensioner ( ) has a member ( ) movable by an actuating fluid to tension the seat belt webbing ( ). The pretensioner ( ) further has at least one microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device ( ) energizable to supply actuating fluid to move the member ( ).

Gas generating material for a vehicle occupant protection apparatus

Apparatus ( ) for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle ( ) that has a side structure ( ) and a roof ( ) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device ( ) inflatable between the side structure and a vehicle occupant. A first tensioning device ( ) is actuatable to move a piston ( ) from a first position towards a second position in a cylinder ( ). A first flexible elongated member ( ) has a first ( ) end connected to the vehicle side structure ( ), an opposite second end ( ) connected to the piston ( ), and an intermediate portion ( ) that extends through the inflatable device ( ). When the first tensioning device ( ) is actuated, the piston ( ) moves the second end ( ) in a first direction, which tensions the first member ( ) and helps to move the inflatable device ( ) towards the deployed position. The inflatable device ( ) resists movement of the piston ( ) in the first direction. The resistance increases to a point at which the resistance prevents movement of the piston ( ) towards the second position.

A door ( ) has a closed position blocking the opening ( ) and an open position enabling ingress and egress through the opening. A structure ( ) assists in maintaining the door ( ) in the closed position. An actuatable device ( ), when actuated, renders the structure unable to assist in maintaining the door in the closed position.

The first portion ( ) moves relative to the second portion ( ) when a force is applied to the first portion, which causes the width of the gap to change. The sensor ( ) provides a signal in response to the change in the gap width.
