An access terminal determines whether a parameter encoded in a signal received from an embedded access point is identified by a list in a memory of the access terminal. Based on the determination, the access terminal initiates communication with a radio area network through the embedded access point.

Method of transferring call transition messages between network controllers of different radio technologies

A method for performing network control in wireless communication systems and a network entity for performing the same. The method and network entity pool at least one network parameter at the network entity, from at least two active set base transceiver stations and determine a current status of a mobile in the wireless communication system, using the pooled network parameters. The active set base transceiver stations may include a serving base transceiver station and a target base transceiver station. The network parameter may be a confidence metric and/or an error metric for each of a plurality of hypotheses, a power up/power down signal, and/or a measured signal-to-noise ratio and/or energy parameter of a pilot signal from the mobile. The current status of the mobile to be determined may be the mobile's decision to switch to the target base transceiver station transceiver or which base transceiver station transceiver the mobile is currently communication with. The network entity may be a base station controller or a base transceiver station in the active set of base transceiver station transceivers for the mobile in question.

A method for switching cells by a mobile equipment of a communication system. The mobile transmits a signal coded with a spreading code indicating the mobile's intent to switch cells and the coded information also identifies to which cell the mobile wants to switch. The coded information contains channel measurement adjustment information that is continuously transmitted to the cell which is currently serving the mobile. The flow of channel measurement adjustment information is therefore not disturbed by the application of the method of the present invention. Because the coded information identifies the target cell and indicates the mobile's intent to perform a cell switching procedure, the amount of processing done by the cells is significantly reduced thus increasing the likelihood of a successful switching procedure.

A variable length sequence number is used to identify data units in a communication channel. The sequence number associated with the most recent data that has been received successfully and the sequence number expected with the next new data message to be received are examined to determine the minimum size sequence number necessary to unambiguously identify to the transmitter incorrectly received data that must be retransmitted in a later message. The receiver provides the transmitter with the sequence number associated with the last successfully received byte of data and the sequence number associated with the next expected byte of data. The receiver communicates this information to the transmitter using a NAK control message. The transmitter then uses the sequence number of the next byte of data to be transmitted and the information received in the control message from the receiver to determine the smallest number of bits necessary to represent the sequence numbers for both data transmissions and the retransmission of data that was not received properly by the receiver.

Efficient automatic repeat request method using variable length sequence numbers

The present invention permits the transmission of variable size PDUs using a Hierarchical Sequence Numbering Space approach that supports ARQ protocols in a variable transmission rate environment. Some of the key attributes of this scheme are: (1) Support for arbitrarily variable PDU sizes; (2) Variable length sequence numbers in protocol headers; (3) Variable depth sequence numbers in protocol headers; (4) Dynamic sequence number context to minimize the size of sequence numbers transmitted in PDUs; (5) Protocol control schemes to coordinate and communicate sequence number space information between peer protocol entities; and (6) Data structures and approaches for the efficient implementation of Hierarchical Sequence Number Space schemes.
