Disclosed herein are glass pharmaceutical vials having sidewalls of reduced thickness. In embodiments, the glass pharmaceutical vial may include a glass body comprising a sidewall enclosing an interior volume. An aluminoborosilicate glass includes alkaline earth oxides and is substantially free of alkali oxides. The glass may be fusion formable and may be useful as a substrate or other article, such as with consumer and commercial electronic devices.

An apparatus for testing a sheet of brittle material is disclosed. The apparatus can include a plurality of assemblies configured for selectively applying a 3-point bending load on an edge of the sheet of material in a test region of the apparatus, a detection mechanism that optically measures strain in the sheet of material in the region, and a processor that determines the stress in the sheet based on the measured strain by calculating the stress that would be required to produce the measured strain in the sheet of material.

Alkali-doped boroaluminosilicate glasses are provided. The glasses include the network formers SiO, BO, and AlO. The glass may, in some embodiments, have a Young's modulus of less than about 65 GPa and/or a coefficient of thermal expansion of less than about 40&#xd7;10/&#xb0; C. The glass may be used as a cover glass for electronic devices, a color filter substrate, a thin film transistor substrate, or an outer clad layer for a glass laminate.

Alkali-doped and alkali-free boroaluminosilicate glass

A glass article includes a glass core layer and a glass cladding layer adjacent to the core layer. A coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the core layer is greater than a CTE of the cladding layer. The core layer has a tensile stress, and the cladding layer has a compressive stress. A retained strength of the glass article is a strength determined after abrasion of an outer surface of the glass article with 1 mL of 90 grit SiC particles for 5 seconds at an abrasion pressure, and a ratio of the retained strength at an abrasion pressure of 25 psi to the retained strength at an abrasion pressure of 5 psi is at least about 0.3.

Glass article

A scratch resistant alkali aluminoborosilicate glass. The glass is chemically strengthened and has a surface layer that is rich in silica with respect to the remainder of the glass article. The chemically strengthened glass is then treated with an aqueous solution of a mineral acid other than hydrofluoric acid, such as, for example, HCl, HNO, HSO, or the like, to selective leach elements from the glass and leave behind a silica-rich surface layer. The silica-rich surface layer improves the Knoop scratch threshold of the ion exchanged glass compared to ion exchanged glass that are not treated with the acid solution as well as the post-scratch retained strength of the glass.
