A plurality of interface modules (200,300,400,500) having identical first mating interfaces (202,302) for mating with the mating face (100) of a cable tap connector (10), to enable interconnection therewith at second mating interfaces by different types of electrical conductors. A set of contacts in each module have identical first contact sections (212,318) along the first mating interface, and the contacts are secured in the module housing (206,306) under an insulative retention plate (210,360) that assuredly secures the contacts in proper position for accurate positioning of the first contact sections. The insulative plate (210,360) also protects the first contact sections during handling of the module.

Electrical interface connector

A connector (10,200,300) for termination to a multiconductor cable (12,306) along a length thereof at a point remote from an end thereof, such as after installation of the cable within a premises, and including a housing (20,202,302) and a cover (22,204,304) securable to each other around the cable. The housing contains a plurality of contacts (60,220,320) with first contact sections (66,234,328) in slots (62,236,330) that open onto the cable face adjacent the cable jacket. Upon actuation of actuators (90,222,326), the contacts associated with the actuators are urged downwardly against the cable jacket, penetrating the jacket (14) and compressively engaging the cable's conductors (16). Second contact sections (68,232,348) are exposed along the mating face (72,214,310) of the connector for mating with complementary contacts of an interface module (400).

Power cable tap connector

An interface for connecting co-planar printed circuit ('PC') boards (10,20) using a compressible circuit (50) for bridging the PC boards (10,20), a base (80) underlying the second PC board and integrally attached thereto, and a support housing (30) which sandwiches the compressible circuit (50) against the two PC boards (10,20). The compressible circuit (50) is insertable into the underside of the support housing (30) and may be electro-optically aligned therewith. The compressible circuit (50) is then staked to the support housing (30), and the support housing is mounted on the two PC boards (10,20). In order to mount the support housing (30) on the PC boards (10,20) with the requisite precision, the support housing (30) is provided with alignment means including resilient finger (39) on the underside, and the second PC board (20) is provided with cooperating guide tabs (25). The electro-optic alignment and attachment of the compressible circuit (50) with the support housing (30) together with the precise alignment of the support housing (30)over the two PC boards (10,20) insures a precision high-density interface.

Flex circuit interface for co-planar PCBs

A compressible electrical connector (10) includes a rigid molded body (11) having elastomeric caps (19, 20) at the top (12) and bottom (13) thereof. A thin flexible film (21), provided with respective connector elements (22), is wrapped around the rigid molded body (11) and its caps (19, 20) and is retained by a film retaining plate (23). The film retaining plate (23) has a plurality of latching lances (24) received in corresponding mounting holes (30) formed transversely in the rigid molded body (11). A hot melt layer (36) is placed over the film retaining plate (23), and a plurality of compressible electrical connectors (10) are stacked side-by-side to form an array (35). The array (35) is disposed between a pair of PC boards or other electronic assemblies (39, 40) having respective circuit elements (37, 38). The height of the rigid molded body may be changed conveniently to readily accommodate different product applications.

Compressible electrical connectors for large board spacings

A connector body (10 10', 10') is mounted on a mother board (11) and has a compressible electrical connector (15). A daughter board (22) is slidably inserted into the connector body (10, 10', 10') perpendicularly of the mother board (11). A deflection means (34, 56) engages a side of the daughter board (22) and deflects the daughter board (22) away from the compressible electrical connector (15) to prevent damage thereto after the daughter board (22) is slidably inserted. When the daughter board (22) is fully inserted, a retaining means 28, 43, 69) exerts a lateral clamping force on the daughter board (22).

Mechanical and electrical clamping mechanisms between a 'mother' board

A molded connector housing (10) has respective pairs of integrally-molded latching fingers (18,20,21) for quick assembly to respective mother and daughter boards (11,12). A locking plunger (25) is received between the pairs of latching fingers (18,20,21) to secure the assembly. The plunger (25) may also be used with an axially-compressible fastener or grommet (43). In lieu of the latching fingers, an integrally-molded fastener (50) cooperates with a conical nut (52) having circumferentially-spaced ears (53) slidably received in slots (51) in the fastener.

Modular electronic assemblies using compressible electrical connectors

A high density connector (10) includes a plastic housing (12) with covers (30, 38) hinged to a frame (14) and foldable thereagainst to compress a plurality of circuits (60, 67) fitted between the covers to engage and compress elastomeric members (46, 54) and be interconnected thereby through fasteners (76-82), clamping the assembly of circuits and housing together. Embodiments include having frame and cover hinged at the sides by hinges (36, 44) or at the ends by hinges (108, 116) and including integrally molded cover frame and hinges versions include interconnecting two or more boards from the same or opposite directions relative to the connector housing.

Foldable stacking connector

An electrical connector for interconnecting the contact pads (52, 56) of components (49, 53) features a planar lamination of insulating sheets forming a body (39) having recesses (46, 48) and apertures (44) containing contacts (10) formed of flat metal stock having spring characteristics including spring elements (22, 26, 30, 36) which provide a redundancy of contact interface through extending upwardly and downwardly relatively to said lamination to engage and interconnect the contact pads. Each of the spring elements is attached to a contact base with a free end providing a cantilever spring action, including wipe of contact points.

Planar array connector and flexible contact therefor

An electrical connector (20) includes fine wires (44) adhesively bound to an insulating film (42) to form a contact strip (40) inelastically formed into a generally C-shaped configuration to provide an electrical interconnection between the contact pads (14) of a printed circuit board (12) and the contact pads (54) of an electrical component (52). An insulating housing comprised of insulating members (24) includes interior surfaces configured to receive the contact strip (40) and retain such in position with the elements being held together by a frame (22) and a plate (60) in conjunction with fasteners (18) holding the assembly of parts to the circuit board (12).

Wire form socket connector

A thickness monitoring system for measuring the thickness of layer disposed on both sides of a two sided strip includes a thickness measuring device, a first set of guide rollers mounted to guide the strip past the thickness measuring device along a first path, a set of guide pulleys mounted to invert the strip and to offset the strip laterally with respect to the first path, and a second set of guide rollers which guide the inverted strip past the thickness measuring device along the second path. The thickness measuring device is mounted for movement along a third path which is transverse to the first and second paths to allow the thickness measuring device to monitor either side of the strip by positioning the measuring device in alignment with the respective one of the first and second paths.
