An exhaust system for a vehicle having a diesel engine and a method of operation are disclosed. The exhaust system may include a diesel particulate filter, a pipe located downstream of the diesel particulate filter and an exhaust gas cooling assembly. The exhaust gas cooling assembly may have an air pump and a connecting pipe connected to the pipe and configured to direct air from the air pump into the pipe. During particulate filter regeneration, the air pump may be activated to push air into the exhaust in order to reduce the temperature of exhaust gasses exiting the vehicle.

A pig tail spring exhaust hanger includes a pig tail coil having at one end an upper arm and at the other end a lower arm. The upper arm is mounted to the vehicle underbody, and the lower arm is connected to the exhaust system, wherein the orientation of the upper and lower arms is substantially vertical and the orientation of the central axis of the pig tail coil is substantially horizontal. This arrangement provides a moment at each of the upper and lower arms which act to suspended weight of the exhaust system radially with respect to the pig tail coil.

Exhaust system assemblies employ wire bushings for thermal compensation to minimize noise due to 'stick-slip' while the system cools. In a preferred embodiment, the wire bushings are formed of at least one strand of wire coiled about male end portions of pipe sections used in the system, each of which male end portions are inserted into a female end portion and held therein by an interference fit. The strand of wire is spot welded at spaced locations to the male end portions to provide bearing surfaces between the spot welds that move slightly as the exhaust system heats and cools to relieve thermal stress in small, substantially inaudible increments.

A heat shield and gasket assembly has three members including a first heat shield, a second heat shield, and a gasket. Each of the members has a flange portion and the flange portion of the gasket is sandwiched is between the flanges of the two heat shields. The flange portion of the gasket is thinner than the flange portions of the heat shields. The thinness of the gasket flange permits it to engage threaded assembly fasteners without compromising the thread integrity of the fasteners.

A gasket and heat shield for sealing and insulating a flanged joint has a first body portion, which contains a gasket member and a second body portion disposed at an angle relative to the first body portion. The first body portion incorporates two openings to accommodate the fasteners, which will be utilized to secure members of a flanged joint together with the first body portion secured therebetween.
