An ignition apparatus includes a transformer having a central core, a primary winding disposed thereabout, a secondary winding disposed outwardly of the primary winding, and an outer core or shield disposed outwardly of the secondary winding. The central and outer cores and the primary and secondary windings define a magnetic circuit through which magnetic flux flows during various phases of operation. An end-of-spark natural ringing of the secondary voltage is suppressed and limited by a control winding disposed in relation in the magnetic circuit. The control winding has a pair of terminals across which is connected a diode. The diode is oriented so that during a spark event, it is reverse biased but after the spark event it becomes forward-biased when the secondary voltage is positive so as to selectively facilitate dissipation of any residual electrical charge. Ringing is further suppressed by a resistor connected across the primary winding, or selectively connected across the primary winding using a controlled switch.

Method and apparatus to reduce ring out in an ignition coil to allow for ion sense processing

An ignition coil assembly includes a high voltage (HV) diode at both ends of the secondary winding. The diodes prevent a spark-on-make condition. The diode implementation has particular benefits when used in a 42 volt automotive electrical system.

A method of assembling an ignition coil cassette assembly for use with an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinder assemblies each including a spark plug, and an ignition coil cassette assembly provided in accordance with the invention methodology. The cassette assembly includes a plurality of ignition coils for respective electrical coupling to the respective spark plugs, whereby to deliver high voltage charges to the spark plugs in accordance with a predetermined firing order, a cassette body structure interconnecting and mounting the ignition coils in spaced downstanding relation with respect to the body, a printed circuit board for delivering power to the coils, and electronic components mounted on the board. A plurality of upwardly opening pockets are provided in the cassette body; the electronic components are positioned in the pockets; the ignition coils are positioned in the cassette body; the printed circuit board is positioned in overlying relation to the electronic components and upper ends of the ignition coils; and upstanding pins on the electronic components are soldered to the printed circuit board while simultaneously soldering upstanding pins on the upper ends of ignition coils to the printed circuit board.

Ignition coil cassette assembly

A system is provided for preventing spark-on-make in an internal combustion engine, using manifold pressure information. The system includes a pressure sensor and a controller. The pressure sensor is adapted to detect pressure in an intake manifold and provide an output signal indicative of that pressure. The controller is at least indirectly connected to the pressure sensor and is adapted to delay initiation of ignition dwell in a coil by a period of time sufficient to avoid spark-on-make, in response to the output signal from the sensor. Preferably, the pressure sensor is a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. The controller preferably is implemented by suitably programming or otherwise configuring an electronic engine control unit (ECU). Also provided is a method for preventing spark-on-make in an internal combustion engine.

A dual primary, single secondary ignition coil and control provides for establishment of a continuous extended arc across a pair of electrodes or dual arcs across the pair of electrodes. Continuous extended arcs are advantageous in extended burn applications and dual arcs are advantageous in gas plasma ion sense misfire detection applications.
