A method for forming a mold-release coating on a mold surface includes providing a coating of material on the mold surface. The coating of material has a surface which is capable of accepting and retaining a release powder. The method also includes depositing the release powder onto the coating of material. The release powder embeds the coating of material upon deposition thereby forming a mold-release coating.

The method for forming a mold-release coating on a mold surface includes two basic steps: (a) providing a base coat of material on the mold surface and (b) electrostatically depositing a release powder onto the base coat of material. The base coat of material has a surface which is capable of accepting and retaining the release powder. Upon deposition of the release powder, the release powder embeds the base coat of material thereby forming a mold-release coating. The base coat may be a wax or a solvent base wax.

An improved tackifier for making tackified substrates contains: (a) at least one epoxy resin, and (b) at least one curing agent for the epoxy resin, but (c) no catalytic amount of catalyst for the reaction between the epoxy resin and the curing agent. The tackified substrates are used to make composites by: (1) placing one or more of the tackified substrates in a mold; (2) injecting into the mold a matrix resin formulation which is chemically-similar to the tackifier, except that it contains a catalytic amount of catalyst for the reaction between the epoxy resin and the curing agent; and (3) curing the matrix resin formulation. The tackifiers are more storage-stable than similar tackifiers which contain catalyst, and the resulting composites have and/or retain physical properties better than composites made using tackifiers without curing agent.

Flexible polyurethane foams are prepared using certain high molecular weight, high functionality poly(oxyethylene) compounds as cell openers and softeners. These high functionality polyether polyols have been found to be very effective in opening the cells of the foam, even when used in making foams based on PIPA polyols, which are notoriously closed-celled. They are also quite effective in softening foams made using MDI-based polyisocyanates.

This invention is a polyurethane-urea elastomer which is the reaction product of a reaction mixture comprising (1) a liquid active hydrogen-containing composition which comprises a relatively high equivalent weight active hydrogen-containing compound, and an amine-terminated, relatively low equivalent weight compound, (2) a polyisocyanate which is present in an amount to provide about 0.8 to about 1.5 isocyanate groups per active hydrogen-containing group present in the mixture, and (3) a catalytically effective amount of a bismuth carboxylate catalyst. With the use of the bismuth carboxylate catalyst, excellent pot-life, yet rapid cures are achieved. In addition the so-called 'green strength' of the elastomer, i.e., its physical strength at the time of its removal from the mold, is improved with the practice of this invention. Further, the post-cured elastomer exhibits excellent properties.

An improved process for making tetrarhodium dodecacarbonyl, Rh.sub.4 (CO).sub.12, reacts RhCl.sub.3.xH.sub.2 O with CO under about 200 psig (14.06 kg/cm.sup.2) at a temperature of about 50.degree. C. in the presence of copper metal and an alkali metal halide, e.g. NaCl. The product mixture is contacted with a chlorinated solvent, e.g. CH.sub.2 Cl.sub.2, which dissolves the desired product and is subsequently recovered by evaporating the solvent.
