A mobile wireless communication device provides information to a communication infrastructure. In response to the information, a serving base station of the mobile wireless communication device sends a transition instruction to the mobile wireless communication device indicating the mobile wireless communication device is authorized to perform a transition procedure from the serving base station to any one of a group of base stations. The transition instruction authorizes the mobile wireless communication device to perform the transition procedure in response to a trigger and without transmitting any measurement reports. In response to determining the trigger has occurred and without transmitting a measurement report, the mobile wireless communication device transitions from receiving communication service from the serving base station to receiving communication service from a target base station of the group of base stations.

Handover management based on speeds of wireless communication devices

A mobile wireless communication device notifies communication infrastructure that the mobile wireless communication device is traveling at a speed greater than a threshold speed. In response, the network infrastructure instructs the mobile wireless communication device to use a transition procedure to transition between base stations where the transition procedure is different from a handover procedure used by the mobile wireless communication device to change base stations when the speed of the mobile wireless communication device is less than or equal to the threshold speed.

In a communication system that includes at least a first base station having a first geographical service area and second base station having a second geographical service area that overlaps at least partially with the first geographical service area, a relaying mobile wireless communication device receiving service from the second base station receives and forwards scheduling information to the second base station, where the scheduling information is transmitted by the first base station and identifies communication resources that will be used for wireless communication by the first base station. Based at least on the scheduling information, the second base station schedules communication resources to mobile wireless communication devices receiving service from the second base station such that interference is reduced, minimized, or eliminated.

Advance communication resource notification in wireless communication systems having overlapping service areas

A method of handover signaling in a cellular communication system is disclosed. Prior to a user equipment (UE) undergoing a cell-to-cell transition, a target node transmits handover-related signaling in one or more Multicast Broadcast Single Frequency Network (M8SFN) subframes in order to reduce handover delay. The cellular communication system includes a source node configured to transfer a handover (HO) request to the target node. The (HO) request corresponds to a (UE) presently being served by the source node. The target node is configured to transmit (HO) information to the (UE) over at least one MBSFN subframe in response to the (HO) request.

Handover signaling using an MBSFN channel in a cellular communication system

A cellular communication system and method for delivering information, e.g., data and/or control-signaling, to a user equipment (UE) from a neighboring node are disclosed. The cellular communication system includes a first node configured to transmit information in one or more Multicast Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) subframes over a radio frequency (RF) (ink between the first node and the UE, while the UE is being served by a second node. The first node can use a network-defined, dedicated portion of the MBSFN subframe for this purpose. Instead of only allowing the second node to send data/signaling messages to the UE, the disclosed techniques allow neighboring nodes to also deliver information to the UE. In particular, the neighboring nodes can transmit data and/or control-signaling to the UE using MBSFN subframes in order to minimize signaling overhead and signaling delay.

Handovers of mobile wireless communications device from a source base station to a target base station are managed by transmitting handover information over a shared broadcast channel. The handover information required by a mobile wireless communication device for performing a handover may be transmitted within a Multicast Broadcast Multimedia Services (MBfviS) Single Frequency Network (M8SFN) subframe in some circumstances. In one example, the handover information includes Uplink (UL) allocation information, timing advance (TA) information, and a Cell Radio Network Temporary Identifier (C-RNTI), The synchronization between base stations of the MBMS system allows for the elimination of some messaging required in conventional systems for synchronization between the mobile wireless communication service and a target base station. As a result the time for performing a handover is reduced.

Handover management using a broadcast channel in a network having synchronized base stations

Systems and methods for transparent handovers of mobile relays on high-speed vehicles. In an embodiment, a base station of a wireless communications network transmits identification data to a mobile relay on a high-speed vehicle. The identification data identifies base stations which are configured for transparent handovers. The network also receives data indicative of a scheduled path of the high-speed vehicle, which it uses to select a target base station for communication with the mobile relay. Once the target base station has been selected, the network begins servicing the mobile relay from the second base station, without requiring any measurement values from the mobile relay and without handover signaling.

Systems and methods for transparent point-to-point handovers of a mobile relay

A proxy multicast-broadcast single-frequency network (MBSFN) subframe conforming to a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) communication specification is transmitted within an MBSFN proxy region that at least partially overlaps with a non-LTE service area of a non-LTE access node providing wireless service to user equipment (UE) devices in the non-LTE service area. The non-LTE access node provides wireless service in accordance with a non-LTE communication specification that is different from the LTE communication specification. The MBSFN proxy region is smaller than, and is within an LTE service area of an LTE access node that provides wireless service to UE devices within the LTE service area in accordance with the LTE communication specification. The proxy MBSFN subframe is transmitted with a timing and frequency such that a UE device receiving service from the LTE access node is capable of receiving the MBSFN subframe.

Transmission of MBSFN subframe within a non-LTE service area

Small cell discovery signals are transmitted within a subframe allocated for transmission of Device-to-Device (D2D) discovery signals. In accordance with a communication standard, communication resources are organized into frames having subframes for communication within a cellular communication system. Wireless service is provided to mobile UE devices in different sized cells that may overlap. In addition, at least some mobile UE devices can communicate with each other using D2D communication resources. D2D discovery signals are transmitted by mobile UE devices to facilitate the discovery of the mobile UE devices by other mobile UE devices. The communication standard allocates one or more subframes within a frame of a frequency defined communication resource for transmission of the D2D discovery signals. The small cell discovery signals are also transmitted within the subframe to facilitate recognition that a small cell mobile UE device is within the small cell service area.

A method for selecting an air interface on a multi-mode wireless device capable of communicating over a plurality of air interfaces. The method comprising starting a first application and selecting a first application specific access list of a set of application specific access lists, the first application specific access list corresponding to the first application. The method also comprising selecting a first active network from the first application access specific list, the first network representing an available and most desirable network for the first application in the first application specific access list. The method further activating the first active network for use by the first application and switching from the first active network to a second active network if a user switches from the first application to a second application, wherein the first active network and the second active network are ascertained based on the set of application specific access lists.

Method for selecting an air interface on a multi-mode wireless device

A wireless communications device and network having the ability to detect when a call session with a public service access point (PSAP) has not transferred location information for the wireless device to the PSAP. In on embodiment, the detection means includes a location request timer (LRT), which is started when the emergency call is initiated. If the LRT expires before a request for location information is received by the wireless communications device, the wireless device concludes that the PSAP does not have the location information. In another embodiment the wireless network determines the PSAP does not have location information without a timer. The location information is then presented to a caller on the wireless device, which allows the caller of the wireless device to relay the information to a human PSAP operator. The location information may also be provided to a human PSAP operator in a automated manner.

E911 location reporting without PSAP support

A system and method are presented for minimizing loss of voice packet during a wireless communications device Candidate Frequency Search (CFS). The method includes monitoring frames in a predetermined sample frame sequence and identifying frames having minimal user information. That is, frames with lower frame rates. The method further includes, in a wireless communications device, performing a CFS responsive to identifying frames having minimal user information. One example of the method includes identifying a lowest frame rate in an initial frame and performing a CFS in a frame following the initial frame. The method includes monitoring forward direction link frames and reverse direction link frames, and simultaneously monitoring forward and reverse direction link frames.

System and method for minimizing voice packet loss during a wireless communications device candidate frequency search (CFS)

Briefly, the location capable mobile handset allows the user to provide a call recipient with the location of an unsuccessful attempted emergency call. In one specific example, the call may be an E911 call to a PSAP dispatcher, however, it will be appreciated that the call may be to request assistance from a family member, or friend. Additionally, the call may be to a towing service. The call could be any call that a mobile handset user wants to send location information to the party that has been called. Returning to the E911 call example, the location information reported to dispatcher can include the location of initial E911 call, current location during a successful E911 call, or ground track information from the initial location to the current location. When an E911 call is unsuccessfully attempted the mobile handset stores the location of the mobile handset at that time. This information can later be transmitted when the mobile handset is in a coverage area. Additionally, the mobile handset can auto-dial 911 upon entering a service area after an unsuccessful E911 attempt. Alternately the user can be prompted to initiate an E911 call when the mobile handset enters a service area.

The substrate for implementation of MMIC devices comprises alumina with feedthrough holes drilled therein to provide conduct ion paths from the top surface of the substrate to the bottom surface. A high-temperature to low-temperature fabrication process is used to form circuit traces and components upon the substrate. Each of the thick film deposition processes is followed by a firing process to remove organic materials from the deposited material and to secure the material to the substrate or previous layer. A Ku-band transceiver constructed using the process includes the attachment of six discrete, unpackaged MMIC's and one HEMT. All other devices and traces are patterned on the substrate and the discrete components are directly attached to pads on the substrate.
