An Internet mail bridge is provided for downloading e-mail messages from Internet mail servers supporting different email protocols, such as the Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) and Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (Web DAV) protocol, and delivering the downloaded messages, which are in different formats, to a mail server on a local area network. The Internet mail bridge has a mail manager that is independent from particular e-mail protocols or e-mail formats. For each e-mail account, the mail manager instantiates a mail connector object that contains logic for downloading e-mail according to the e-mail access protocol of that account, and invokes the mail connector object to download e-mail messages from that account. The mail manager then instantiates and invokes mail deliverer objects tailored for handling different message formats to deliver the downloaded messages to the local mail server.

Internet e-mail bridge

A computer system that recognizes multi-function devices and associates functions with multi-function devices. Each multi-function device may be represented by a multi-function object, allowing tools, applications or other components within the computer to take actions relating to the entire device or relating to a function based on the association of that function with other functions in the same device. These actions include displaying information about devices, instead of or in addition to information about functions. Actions also include selecting functions based on proximity within a device. Functions may be associated with a multi-function device using a unique device identifier provided by the device or generated for the function based on a connection hierarchy between functions and the computer. Devices may be configured to provide the same identifier regardless of the transport over which the device is accessed.

Multi-function devices expose multiple functions to device drivers or other lower-level software. Device function providers can interface with such drivers or lower-level software and can provide information, including device identifiers regarding such functions, to a device display object infrastructure. A device display object can then be created that encompasses one or more functions such that, in one embodiment, the device display object corresponds to a single, physical multi-function device. Alternatively, any combination of functionality from one or more physical devices can be combined into a single device display object representing a virtual multi-function device. Properties of the device display object can be set with reference to user-specified settings, remotely maintained metadata, locally available metadata, and information associated with each function. Functions can be ranked such that, if there is a conflict, information from more highly ranked functions is used to set the properties of the device display object.

Pairing service technologies is described. In embodiment(s), peripheral devices can be discovered, such as by a computer device, and a peripheral device can be configured with multiple services that each correspond to one or more data communication protocols. The multiple services of the peripheral device can be determined, and a pairing sequence can be prioritized for the multiple services. The data communication protocol(s) can then be paired according to the pairing sequence to configure the multiple services of the peripheral device.

Pairing service technologies

An input including information specifying criteria for selecting computer resources is processed to produce an output comprising one or more function instances associated with computer resources satisfying the criteria. Included in each of the one or more function instances are metadata and information that specifies a mechanism for accessing a computer resource associated with the function instance.

Data associated with a function instance corresponding to a resource on one computer system is published for use on another computer system. A function instance is created on the other computer system using the published data.

An improved system and method for discovering and configuring secure network topologies responds to existing networking environments and encompasses the dynamic detection and configuration of an appropriate hardware or software solution. In an embodiment of the invention, a broadcast mechanism is used to provide hardware device discovery while application programming interfaces provide discovery of software firewalls. In a further embodiment, a polling technique is used to ensure that the configuration of a gateway device does not change, endangering the protected network.
