A method of controlling a pump and motor system having at least one of a variable displacement pump and a variable displacement motor. The method may comprise providing an engine drivingly coupled to a primary load and a secondary load, the secondary load being driven by the pump and motor system. The method may also comprise sensing a change in engine speed in response to a change in the primary load. The method may further comprise changing the engine speed to compensate for the primary load change. The method may further comprise changing a displacement of the at least one variable displacement pump and the variable displacement motor to maintain a constant secondary load.

A rear wheel drive assist for an articulated machine such as a wheel tractor scraper, the machine including a first frame section having a first longitudinal axis, a second frame section with a second longitudinal axis, the first and second frame sections being pivotally connected to an articulation hitch, and an articulation sensor configured to provide an articulation angle signal indicative of an articulation angle formed between the first and second longitudinal axes. The rear wheel drive assist includes a drive motor operatively connected to the rear wheel of the machine, and a controller configured to control operation of the rear wheel drive assist based upon the articulation angle signal.

A method for indirectly detecting a movement of a machine and a failure of a speed sensor is disclosed. The method may include receiving an operator input signal, and determining a first factor based on the operator input signal. The method may also include measuring a machine operation parameter, and determining a second factor based on the machine operation parameter. The method may further include identifying a movement of the machine if the first factor is out of a first threshold range and the second factor is out of a second threshold range for at least a first threshold length of time. The method may also include determining a speed sensor failure if the movement of the machine is identified and no speed is detected by the speed sensor for at least a second threshold length of time.

A vehicle control system includes a first powertrain, a second powertrain, and a third powertrain. The first powertrain includes a first power source. The second powertrain includes a second power source. The third powertrain includes a third power source. The vehicle control system also includes an operator control interface. The operator control interface includes a first portion configured to receive a first operator input and a second portion configured to receive a second operator input. The first operator input and the second operator input are indicative of a desired speed and a desired direction. The vehicle control system additionally includes a controller configured to deliver a power control signal to at least one of the first powertrain, the second powertrain, and the third powertrain. The power control signal is a function of the first operator input and the second operator input.

A wheel tractor scraper having a rear wheel drive assist, the wheel tractor scraper includes a tractor portion pivotally coupled to a rear scraper portion, the rear scraper portion having a bowl for hauling material and a fluid powered work tool configured to assist in loading the bowl, the work tool powered by a fluid pump connected to a fluid operated work tool motor. The rear wheel drive assist includes a fluid operated drive motor coupled to the rear wheels of the machine, a diverter valve having a first position at which fluid flow is delivered from the pump to the work tool motor and a second position at which fluid flow is delivered from the pump to the drive motor, and a controller being configured to control the diverter valve to engage the rear wheel drive assist. The machine may be operated by engaging the pump and work tool motor, and then actuating the diverter valve to the second position to divert flow from the work tool motor to the drive motor.

A control system for a machine having an engine is disclosed. The engine has a first electronic governor. The first electronic governor is operable to control the engine. The engine also has a memory including predetermined configuration data. The engine also has a second electronic governor. The second electronic governor is operable to control the engine. The second electronic governor is connected to the first electronic governor via a datalink. The second electronic governor is configured to automatically receive the predetermined configuration data from the first electronic governor.

A engine control system and a method of controlling a torque output of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The engine control system comprises a torque receiving device operably connected to the engine, a sensor to sense an engine parameter, and an electronic device operably connected to the sensor. The electronic sensor is operable to determine a second engine speed from sensed engine parameters, a droop speed, and a selected one of a plurality of torque maps requiring a minimum amount of fuel. The electronic sensor is also operable to transmit a signal indicative of the second engine speed to a fuel system to control the amount of fuel delivered to the engine.
