An ice protection system for an aircraft includes one or more heaters configured to be coupled to a surface of a wing of the aircraft. The ice protection system also includes a controller configured to, in response to a first determination indicating presence of an icing condition, determine a setpoint temperature for a first location of an outer surface of the wing configured to be heated by a heater of the one or more heaters. The controller is also configured to control power provided to the heater based on the setpoint temperature. The setpoint temperature for the first location is determined to cause a second location of the outer surface of the wing, which is heated by the heater and is located at a particular distance from the first location, to remain above a threshold temperature based on a projected temperature profile of the outer surface heated by the heater.

Ice protection system for an aircraft

Aircraft environmental control systems having electrically powered ram circuit fans are described herein. An example environmental control system includes an air cycle machine to produce cabin air for a cabin of the aircraft. The air cycle machine includes a turbine and a heat exchanger. The environmental control system also includes a ram circuit. The heat exchanger is disposed in the ram circuit. The environmental control system further includes a fan in the ram circuit to control air flow through the ram circuit and across the heat exchanger, an electric motor, and an overrunning clutch operatively coupled between the turbine and the electric motor to enable the turbine to drive the fan during a first mode of operation and to enable the electric motor to drive the fan during a second mode of operation.

Aircraft environmental control systems having electrically powered ram circuit fans

An anti-ice system is disclosed, including an airfoil structure having a leading-edge portion facing a wind direction. The airfoil structure includes an outer skin and an inner skin which form a plurality of channels, each channel having an air inlet and an air outlet. An air delivery duct inside the airfoil structure extends transverse to the wind direction and has a plurality of openings directed toward the air inlets of the channels. A heat exchanger is configured to provide hot air to the air delivery duct.

Leading-edge thermal anti-ice systems and methods

Hydrogen gas is generated on demand by reacting hydrochloric acid (haloacid) and a pure metal by flowing the acid upwardly through a bed of metal particles held on a distributor plate within a sliding tray. The tray reciprocates in a retaining vessel. A port in the retaining vessel can be aligned with a drain port in the sliding tray (below the distributor plate) so that the solution in the bed can be shunted directly to an annulus between the retaining vessel and the reactor jacket, thereby eliminating contact of acid and metal and stopping the generation of hydrogen. A coolant may be circulated in the base of the retaining vessel to control the temperature of the acid as it enters the bed, thereby helping to control the reaction rate.
