As disclosed herein, a system may comprise a handheld device in electronic communication with a controller. The handheld device may comprise a housing defining an internal cavity and an orifice providing access to the internal cavity. A trigger may comprise an external and an internal surface. The trigger may be oriented to cover the orifice. A transfer member may be oriented in the internal cavity and coupled to the internal surface of the trigger. A force sensor may be oriented in the internal cavity and may engage a distal end of the transfer member and the internal surface of the trigger. A transfer roller may be oriented in the internal cavity and coupled to the distal end of the transfer member. A cam may be oriented in the internal cavity and may engage the transfer member. A motor may be oriented in the internal cavity and coupled to the cam.

A printer having an internal electrical power supply is disclosed herein. A method for controlling power consumption in the printer includes receiving an image to be printed, calculating an estimated temperature of the printer, and controlling a speed of the printer to control the power consumption to keep a temperature of the printer below a predetermined maximum temperature in response to the estimated temperature.

Resting position error recognition for an ink-jet, translational-type, service station mechanism. Service station drive mechanism binding due to hard stop impact is compensated for by calculating a difference between when the drive mechanism stops and when a predetermined velocity change was first recorded. In a more sophisticated embodiment, noise filtering is employed to improve accuracy with increasing number of uses of the service station mechanism.

A unitary, rotary encoder disk provides low cost, ease of manufacture, and resolution capability exceeding through hole encoders and, in one embodiment, equivalent to that achieve in thin film technologies. The unitary construct is molded as a transparent polymer disk, with integrated mounting features. Either molded disk surface features or laser burning is used to facilitate the position graduation mark forming process.
