A well tool to be oriented and secured in a wellbore without the external application of torque, and a well system incorporating the same. After installation of orientation casing and universal latch coupling casing, the self-orienting selective lockable latch well tool is run downhole to the target depth, picked up to free the internal locking mechanism, and then loaded with downhole stress to engage the locking mechanism.

This disclosure may generally relate to drilling operations and, more particularly, to systems and methods for sidetracking an existing well. A bottom hole assembly may comprise a milling assembly, a whipstock coupled to the milling assembly, wherein the whipstock comprises an inclined ramp configured for diverting the milling assembly toward a casing string, and a downhole subassembly coupled to the whipstock, wherein the downhole subassembly comprises a body portion and one or more components on the body portion operable to weaken and/or remove material from the casing string.

A method includes severing a liner positioned in a first wellbore at least partially lined with casing and thereby providing a severed end, conveying a mid-completion assembly into the first wellbore and receiving the severed end within a tail pipe assembly of the mid-completion assembly, wherein a smallest inner diameter of the mid-completion assembly is greater than or equal to a smallest inner diameter of the liner and thereby permits tools sized for operations in the liner to pass through the mid-completion assembly, actuating an expandable device of the mid-completion assembly to sealingly engage an inner surface of the casing uphole from the severed end, and drilling a second wellbore extending from the first wellbore.

Apparatus and associated methods of using provide convenient and economical forming of an opening through a tubular structure in a subterranean well. In a preferred embodiment, a milling guide has a guide profile formed thereon which is operative to guide a cutting tool to contact the tubular structure. An anchor portion of the milling guide grippingly engages the tubular structure to thereby axially and rotationally align the milling guide with the tubular structure. A hydraulic advance mechanism axially displaces the cutting tool relative to the milling guide.

Apparatus for completing a subterranean wellbore and associated methods of using provide relatively uncomplicated and convenient access to a parent wellbore lower portion from a lateral wellbore liner which extends into the parent wellbore above the lower portion. The apparatus is utilized to form an opening through a portion of the liner which overlies the parent wellbore lower portion, thereby providing access thereto. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus includes a milling guide having an axially extending guide profile formed therein, which guide profile is capable of directing a mill toward the liner portion to form the opening. The milling guide is capable of being anchored in the liner to thereby fix its axial and rotational alignment relative to the liner portion.

A method for stabilizing a mill guide in a wellbore extending from an earth surface into the earth has been invented, the wellbore having an inner surface, the method including setting a whipstock at a location in the wellbore, the whipstock having a top and a bottom, moving a mill guide down into the wellbore to contact the whipstock, the mill guide having a body with an upper end, a lower end, and a channel therethrough from the upper end to the lower end, and positioning the mill guide so that a portion of the lower end of the mill guide is stabilizinglyconnected to and/or received and held between the inner surface of the wellbore and an outer surface of the top of the whipstock. A method has been invented for milling within a whipstock set in a wellbore extending from an earth surface down into the earth, the whipstock having a body with a top and a bottom, the method including introducing a mill guide into the wellbore above the whipstock, moving the mill guide into stabilizing contact with the whipstock, the mill guide having a top and a bottom and a channel therethrough from top to bottom, guiding a mill with the mill guide to mill down into the whipstock and through at least a longitudinal portion thereof, the mill having at least a portion thereof in contact with the mill guide while milling the at least a longitudinal portion of the whipstock.
