Provided is an engine oil lubricant composition with improved fuel efficiency. The engine oil lubricant composition may include: a polyalpha olefin base oil component an amount of about 50 wt % to about 90 wt % based on a total weight of the engine oil lubricant composition, wherein the polyalpha olefin base oil component is a Group IV base oil and has a Noack volatility of about 12.5% to about 15%; a Group II base oil component in an amount of about 0.1 wt % to about 50 wt % based on the total weight of the engine oil lubricant composition. The engine oil lubricant composition may have (i) a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. of about 10 cSt or less, (ii) a high temperature high shear viscosity at 150° C. of about 2.2 cP or less, and (iii) a Noack volatility of about 20% or less.

Non-newtonian engine oil lubricant compositions for superior fuel economy

Provided is an engine oil lubricant composition with improved fuel efficiency and engine wear protection. The lubricant composition may include a major amount of an oil basestock from any one or more Group I, Group II, Group III, Group IV or Group V base oils. The resulting engine oil lubricant composition may have a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of 6 cSt or less, and a corrosion protection of at least 90, as measured according the ASTM D6557 Ball Rust Test. The resulting engine oil lubricant composition may also have a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of 6 cSt or less, an HTHS (ASTM D4683) of less than or equal to 2.2 cP at 150&#xb0; C. and a FZG failure load stage of at least 6, as measured by the FZG A10/16.6R/130 test procedure.

Engine oil lubricant compositions and methods for making same with superior engine wear protection and corrosion protection

A method for improving wear control, while maintaining or improving solubility and fuel efficiency, in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and at least one metal salt of a carboxylic acid, as a minor component; wherein the metal salt of the carboxylic acid contains no sulfur or phosphorus; wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of palladium (Pd), silver (Ag), gold (Au), zinc (Zn), and mixtures thereof; wherein the carboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, a cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid, and mixtures thereof; wherein the molar ratio of (zinc+palladium+silver+gold)/phosphorus of said formulated oil is greater than 1.0. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

Lubricating oil compositions with engine wear protection

A method for improving wear control of a steel surface lubricated with a lubricating oil through the generation of thick tribofilms. The method includes: (i) using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil, the formulated oil having a composition comprising at least one lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and at least one lubricating oil additive, as a minor component; and (ii) forming a tribofilm on the steel surface. In time-step tribofilm formation measurements of the lubricating oil by a mini-traction machine (MTM) at constant slide-to-roll ratio (SRR), the saturation traction coefficient (f), which correlates to tribofilm thickness on the steel surface, is greater than about 0.11. In the method of this disclosure, elongation of timing chain due to wear of chain link pins is less than about 0.07%, as determined by Ford Chain Wear (FCW) test conducted in accordance with ILSAC GF-6 specification. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

A method for improving fuel efficiency and energy efficiency, while maintaining or improving deposit control and cleanliness performance, in an engine lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil includes a base oil mixture. The base oil mixture includes a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and at least one cobase stock, as a minor component. The at least one cobase stock is present in an amount sufficient to reduce kinematic viscosity (Kv) of the base oil mixture as determined by ASTM D445, while maintaining or controlling cold cranking simulator viscosity (CCSV) of the lubricating oil as determined by ASTM D5293-15, such that the lubricating oil meets both kinematic viscosity (Kv) and cold cranking simulator viscosity (CCSV) requirements for a SAE engine oil grade as determined by SAE J300 viscosity grade classification system. A lubricating oil having a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and at least one cobase stock, as a minor component.

Method for improving engine fuel efficiency and energy efficiency

A method for preventing or reducing low speed pre-ignition in an engine lubricated with a lubricating oil while maintaining or improving cleanliness by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and at least one boron-containing compound and at least one overbased calcium detergent as minor components. The at least one boron-containing compound includes at least one borated dispersant, or a mixture of a boron-containing compound and a non-borated dispersant. The boron to nitrogen ratio for the at least one boron-containing compound is less than or equal to about 0.3 and the lubricating oil is essentially free of elemental magnesium. The lubricating oils of this disclosure are particularly advantageous as passenger vehicle engine oil (PVEO) products.

Method for preventing or reducing low speed pre-ignition while maintaining or improving cleanliness

A method for improving oxidation stability and viscosity control, while maintaining or improving cleanliness performance and deposit control, in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and a mixture of (i) at least one detergent, and (ii) at least one antioxidant, or a mixture of (i) at least one detergent, (ii) at least one dispersant, and (iii) at least one antioxidant, as minor components. The at least one detergent comprises a sulfonate detergent, the at least one dispersant comprises a borated dispersant, and the at least one antioxidant includes an alkylated diphenylamine. The engine or other mechanical component is lubricated with the lubricating oil operating in the presence of biodiesel fuel. A lubricating oil formulated with the above major and minor components.

Lubricating oil compositions and methods of use thereof

Provided is a non-Newtonian engine oil lubricant composition with improved fuel efficiency and engine wear protection. The lubricant composition includes a major amount of a base oil including a Group II base stock and an optional Group V base stock, from 0.1 to 9.0 wt. % of at least one viscosity modifier and from 0.1 to 1.2 wt. % of at least one friction modifier. The non-Newtonian engine oil lubricant composition has a kinematic viscosity at 100 deg. C. of less than or equal to 10 cSt and an HTHS (ASTM D4683) of less than or equal to 2.2 cP at 150&#xb0; C. Also provided are methods of using the lubricant composition in internal combustion engines and methods of making the lubricant composition.

Non-newtonian engine oil with superior engine wear protection and fuel economy

A method for improving fuel efficiency and reducing frictional properties while maintaining or improving deposit control, in an engine lubricated with a lubricating oil. The lubricating engine oil has a composition including from 75 to 95 wt % of lubricating oil base stock selected from the group consisting of a Group I base stock, a Group II base stock, a Group III base stock, a Group IV base stock, a Group V base stock and combinations thereof; a friction modifier mixture comprising a polymeric ethoxylated fatty acid ester having a molecular weight of greater than or equal to 2000 at from 0.1 to 1.0 wt. % and an organic molybdenum containing friction modifier contributing from 80 to 500 ppm of elemental molybdenum, and an overbased calcium salicylate detergent contributing from 200 to 2000 ppm of elemental calcium; and one or more other lubricating oil additives. The lubricating engine oils are useful in internal combustion engines including direct injection, gasoline and diesel engines.

Method for improving engine fuel efficiency

A method for improving fuel efficiency and reducing frictional properties while maintaining or improving deposit control, in an engine lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including from 75 to 95 wt % of lubricating oil base stock including a Group I base stock or a combination of a Group III, Group IV and Group V base stock including from 30 to 35 wt % Group III, 45 to 55 wt % Group IV and 0 to 5 wt % Group V and a friction modifier mixture comprising a polymeric ethoxylated fatty acid ester at from 0.1 to 1.0 wt. % and a mixed glyceride ester at from 0.1 to 1.0 wt. % of the formulated oil. The lubricating engine oils are useful in internal combustion engines including direct injection, gasoline and diesel engines.

The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and at least one dispersant and a mixture of viscosity modifiers, as minor components. The at least one dispersant is a polyalkenyl succinic derivative and at least one viscosity modifier is a vinyl aromatic-containing polymer or copolymer. A lubricating engine oil having a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, at least one dispersant and a mixture of viscosity modifiers, as minor components. The lubricating engine oils are useful in internal combustion engines including direct injection, gasoline and diesel engines.

A method for improving fuel efficiency and reducing frictional properties, while maintaining or improving deposit control, in an engine lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and a combination of (i) a friction modifier mixture and (ii) a detergent, as a minor component. Fuel efficiency and friction reduction properties are improved and deposit control is maintained or improved as compared to friction reduction properties and deposit control achieved using a lubricating engine oil containing a minor component other than the combination of the friction modifier mixture and detergent. A lubricating engine oil having a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and a combination of (i) a friction modifier mixture and (ii) a detergent, as a minor component.

This invention is directed to passenger car engine oil compositions comprising in admixture 60 wt % to 90 wt % of a first base oil component, based on the total weight of the composition, the first base oil component consisting of a polyalphaolefin base stock or combination of polyalphaolefin base stocks, each having a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of from 3.2 cSt to 3.8 cSt; 0.1 wt % to 20 wt % of a second base oil component, based on the total weight of the composition, the second base oil component consisting of a Group II, Group III or Group V base stock, or any combination thereof; and at least 0.75 wt % viscosity index improver, on a solid polymer basis.

High efficiency engine oil compositions

This invention is directed to ultra-low viscosity passenger car engine oil compositions with a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of from 4 to 6 cSt, and comprising in admixture 60 wt % to 90 wt % of a first base oil component, based on the total weight of the composition, the first base oil component consisting of a polyalphaolefin base stock or combination of polyalphaolefin base stocks, each having a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of from 3.2 cSt to 3.8 cSt; and 0.1 wt % to 20 wt % of a second base oil component, based on the total weight of the composition, the second base oil component consisting of a Group II, Group III or Group V base stock, or any combination thereof; wherein the composition comprises from 0 wt % to less than 0.25 wt % viscosity index improver, on a solid polymer basis.

Low viscosity engine oil compositions

This invention is directed to lubricating compositions comprising a first base oil component consisting of a polyalphaolefin base stock or combination of polyalphaolefin base stocks, each having a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of from 3.2 cSt to 3.8 cSt and obtained by a process comprising: (a) contacting a catalyst, an activator, and a monomer in a first reactor to obtain a first reactor effluent, the effluent comprising a dimer product, a trimer product, and optionally a higher oligomer product, (b) feeding at least a portion of the dimer product to a second reactor, (c) contacting said dimer product with a second catalyst, a second activator, and optionally a second monomer in the second reactor, (d) obtaining a second reactor effluent, the effluent comprising at least a trimer product, and (e) hydrogenating at least the trimer product of the second reactor effluent.
