A urethral prosthesis provides relief of urinary retention and has first and second tubular elements with an interposed bridge segment. A valve can be disposed in the second tubular element to control the flow of urine therethrough.

Treating urinary retention

A brachytherapy device includes a radiation source and a multi-cannula delivery system for implantation of the radiation source into a body tissue site. The radiation source may be, for example, a substantially straight round wire, a substantially straight flat wire, a detented wire, an embossed wire, a bristled wire, a shaped resilient wire, a twisted round wire, a twisted flat wire, or a coil with or without an inner core, and is adapted for implantation into a body tissue site and for delivery of radiation to the body tissue site. The multi-cannula delivery system includes an outer cannula, an outer stylet, an inner cannula, and an inner stylet. Different configurations of the radiation source according to embodiments of the invention improve distribution of the radiation field in the longitudinal direction and resistance to migration of the radiation source inside a patient's body. The multi-cannula delivery system provides for faster and more accurate placement of the radiation source.

Method and apparatus for the delivery of brachytherapy

A ureteral stent for assisting movement of urine along a patient's ureter and into the patient's bladder. The stent includes an elongated tubular segment extending toward the bladder from a kidney end region for placement in the renal cavity to a bladder end region. A central lumen connects at least one opening at the first end region to at least one opening in the bladder end region. Thin flexible tail(s) are attached to the bladder end region of the tubular segment at a point outside the bladder so as to receive urine from the opening in the bladder end region and to transport urine from there across the ureter/bladder junction and into the bladder. The tails include an elongated external urine-transport surface configured to transport urine. The transporting surface(s) are configured to extend along at least part of the ureter, across the ureter/bladder junction, and into the bladder.

A ureteral stent for assisting movement of urine along a patient's ureter and into the patient's bladder. The invention provides a means of boosting the mechanical performance of shaped shaped medical devices comprising polymer hydrogels, such as stents, so that they may be more easily inserted into or removed from the body. In one aspect, the invention provides shaped medical devices having increased mechanical strength and comprising both ionic and covalent crosslinks. In another aspect, the invention provides a shaped medical device having a heterogeneous polymer composition and a variable dissolution or degradation rate along its length. The shaped medical devices according to the present invention retain their shape and stiffness during insertion into the body and can swell and soften inside the body to enhance patient comfort.

Medical devices comprising hydrogel polymers having improved mechanical properties

A variable length ureteral stent assembly. A central catheter tube forms a ureter stent with a retention structure for anchoring the stent in the ureter particularly within the bladder and kidney. The catheter tube is formed of a shape memory material and at least one of the retention structures includes a end portion of the catheter wrapped spirally into a multiple-turn planar coil having an axis that is transverse to the plane of the structure. The retention structure can then be partially unwound while still providing an anchoring function. Partially unwinding increases the length of an intermediate section of the ureteral stent.
