Some embodiments provide a method performed by a digital slate. The method receives input of a first set of metadata for a particular video clip from a user. The method receives a second set of metadata for the particular video clip from a camera as the camera films the particular video clip. The method embeds the first and second sets of metadata in a data storage structure. The method transmits the data structure for later use in matching the first and second sets of metadata with the particular video clip. Some embodiments display at least a portion of the stored metadata about the particular video clip in front of a camera at the start of the particular video clip.

Digital slate

A computer readable medium storing a media editing application for creating media presentations is described. The application includes a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI has (1) a composite display area for displaying graphical representations of a set of media clips that are part of the composite presentation and (2) a navigation tool including several selectable navigation markers associated with several navigable locations in the composite presentation. The selection of a navigation marker causes the composite display area to present the navigable location in the composite presentation that is associated with the selected navigation marker.

Tool for navigating a composite presentation

For a media-editing application that creates composite presentations, a novel grouping tool for grouping several media clips in the composite presentation by drawing a boundary about the media clips is described. The media editing application includes a composite display area for displaying media clips that are part of the composite presentation. The composite display area includes a timeline and one or more tracks that span the timeline for holding one or more media clips. The grouping tool provides a drawing tool that allows a user to draw a boundary in the composite display area. The drawing tool includes a moveable drawing element that moves about the media clips in the composite display area in order to draw the boundary.

Tool for grouping media clips for a media editing application

A method of defining a media editing application for creating media presentations. The method provides a composite display area for displaying a set of clip shapes that represent media clips. It also provides a consolidated editing tool for (1) identifying clip-shape edit points that are near a cursor's location as the cursor moves from track to track in the composite display area and (2) collectively selecting the identified clip-shape edit points along multiple track in order to receive an edit operation to collectively perform on said the clip-shapes of the identified edit points.

Cross-track edit indicators and edit selections

Techniques (methods and devices) that permit a user to define multimedia transitions in terms of user-supplied assets are described. The user supplies the assets necessary to generate the transition such as, for example, an asset movie, an asset matte movie and a background matte movie. (The specific assets required may vary depending upon the transition to be generated.) These assets are then automatically combined (e.g., through compositing) to render a completed multimedia object in which the defined transition is used to visually transition a first image or frame to a second image or frame. The same techniques used in some generic transformation of images or movies are also disclosed.
