A hybrid energy harvesting system for powering underwater vehicles having at least one thermal engine, at least one of a solar or a wave energy harvester, and a battery which stores electric energy produced by the harvesters. The energy harvesters keep the battery charged and thereby expand an underwater vehicle's operational areas to high latitudes and shallow water. Multiple thermal engines employing different phase-change materials can be used to expand the vehicle's working temperature range and thus allow it to operate over a larger area. An electric motor powered by the battery and a pump driven by the motor can be used to pump hydraulic fluid between the accumulators and external bladders of the thermal engines to cause the vehicle to descend and ascend when the thermal gradient to which the vehicle is subjected is insufficient.

Hybrid energy harvesting system for thermal-powered underwater vehicle

A sound source including a first gas filled underwater resonator, a second gas filled underwater resonator connected to the first resonator, where the second resonator comprises a Helmholtz resonator, and at least one excitation member configured to excite the first resonator and the second resonator is disclosed. The first resonator is permanently tuned to produce a first resonant frequency upon excitation by the at least one excitation member and the second resonator is permanently tuned to produce a second resonant frequency upon excitation by the at least one excitation member. The first resonant frequency is different from the second resonant frequency.

A variable inductor includes a three-limbed core first section having an inductor winding wound about a medial limb. An air gap is disposed in the medial limb. The inductor includes a second section having a control limb in which a first end of the control limb is connected to a first outer limb of the three-limbed core, and a second end of the control limb is connected to a second outer limb of the three-limbed core. A control winding is wound about the control limb. The inductor may be used in a control circuit to control a power signal driving a transducer. The inductor may be controlled by a signal derived from a comparison of a voltage phase of a power signal to the transducer and a phase of the current traversing the transducer. A system may include the control circuit, including the variable inductor, and the transducer.

A sound source includes a first gas filled underwater resonator, a second gas filled underwater resonator connected to the first resonator and at least one excitation member configured to excite the first gas filled underwater resonator and the second gas filled underwater resonator, where the first gas filled underwater resonator is permanently tuned to produce a first resonant frequency upon excitation by the at least one excitation member, where the gas filled underwater second resonator is permanently tuned to produce a second resonant frequency upon excitation by the at least one excitation member, and where the first resonant frequency is different from the second resonant frequency.

In various embodiments a variable buoyancy profiling float is disclosed. The variable buoyancy profiling float may comprise a spherical glass housing comprising a first hemisphere and a second hemisphere. The first and second hemispheres may be coupled by a partial vacuum within the spherical glass housing. A buoyancy system may be located at least partially within the spherical glass housing. The buoyancy system may be configured to provide variable buoyancy control to the variable buoyancy profiling float. A sensor bundle may be mounted to the spherical glass housing and may be configured to measure at least one environmental parameter.

The sound source also includes an actuator configured to perturb the gas within the bubble by changing the volume of the gas without adding gas to or removing gas from the bubble. A sound source includes a tubular resonator configured to be filled with a gas. The exterior of the resonator includes rigid and elastomeric portions. The interior of the resonator includes a first volume and a second volume. The volumes are separated by a rigid tubular wall containing at least one orifice. The at least one orifice enables a flow of gas between the volumes. The resonator also includes at least one rigid tubular member configured to move along the rigid tubular wall. The position of the at least one rigid tubular member regulates at least one dimension of the path between the volumes. The sound source also includes a volume velocity actuator disposed within the resonator. The sound source also includes a processing circuit configured to provide a control signal to cause the volume velocity actuator to perturb the gas within the resonator at a defined frequency.
