A process is provided for the production of a polymer of reduced molecular weight by subjecting, in bulk form, a halogenated butyl polymer having at least 75 percent of the unsaturation in the EXO methylene configuration to mastication in an extruder while exposing the masticated polymer to an atmosphere containing ozone. Such reduced molecular weight polymers have an M.sub.n of from about 10,000 to about 40,000 and may be used in caulks and sealants.

Process for polymer production

Polymer-fibre mixtures with improved homogeniety of dispersion of fibres throughout the polymer matrix are prepared from fibres prior mixed or coated with a plasticizer which is compatible with both the fibre and the polymer matrix. Then the plasticizer-fibre combination can be mixed into the polymer matrix, using standard polymer mixing equipment and for reasonable lengths of time, to produce a mixture in which agglomerations of fibres are very materially reduced. A preferred fibre is a fibrillated aramid fibre, dispersion of which in polymers has previously caused particular difficulties. Suitable polymers include hydrocarbon elastomers such as SBR, for use with which an aromatic mineral oil is a preferred plasticizer, and oil-resistant NBR elastomers, for use with which an ester plasticizer such as dioctyl phthalate is preferred.

Dispersions of fibres in rubber

A process is provided for the production of low molecular weight isobutylene polymer by reacting at a temperature of from about 150.degree. to about 250.degree. C. an isobutylene-conjugated diolefin polymer with an oxygen-containing gas in an extruder.

Low molecular weight polymer process

A process is provided for the production of mixtures of polymer and fibrous materials by co-coagulation of the polymer and fibrous material. Mixtures of the polymer and fibrous material and vulcanizates of these mixtures are also described.

Fibre containing polymers and process for production thereof

A process is provided for preparing a vulcanized carbon black-reinforced chloro- or bromobutyl rubber film comprising admixing a polyfunctional amine vulcanization system with a carbon black-reinforced chloro- or bromobutyl rubber latex containing one or more selected emulsifiers, forming a film from the resulting mixture, drying said film and heating the dried film to provide the vulcanized film. The process may be used in the manufacture of coatings, dipped goods and chemical resistant impermeable treated fabrics.

Process for making vulcanized carbon black-reinforced bromobutyl rubber

A process is provided for producing a silica-synthetic polymer mixture by mixing silica, water and an alkyl trimethylammonium halide, adding this mixture to a latex of the synthetic polymer, coagulating the mixture and recovering the silica-polymer mixture. Such mixtures may be used for the production of rubbery vulcanizates such as shoe soles, light colored shaped articles and the like.

Silica-polymer mixtures

A process, and the product of the process, is provided for the production of improved rubbery vulcanizates which contain both of silica or calcium silicate and carbon black as the fillers and two polymers one of which contains hydroxy or epoxy groups. Such vulcanizates may be used in tires, general purpose goods such as belting, and the like.

Vulcanizates

A process, and the product thereof, is provided for the production of improved silica filled rubbery vulcanizates which process comprises mixing a vulcanizable hydrocarbyl polymer containing epoxy groups and silica, shearing the mixture at an elevated temperature, incorporating vulcanization active compounds and vulcanizing. The vulcanizates may be used where reinforced vulcanizates are required.

Silica filled vulcanizates

There is provided a process, and the product of that process, for the production of improved silica or calcium silicate filled rubbery vulcanizates which comprises the preparation of a mixture comprising a vulcanizable hydrocarbyl polymer containing hydroxyl groups, silica or calcium silicate and an organic acid or salt thereof, shearing the mixture at an elevated temperature, incorporating vulcanization active compounds and vulcanizing to produce the improved vulcanizates. Such improved vulcanizates may be used generally in the rubber industry.

Siliceous filled vulcanizates

A process is provided, and the product of that process, for the production of improved silica filled rubbery vulcanizates in which process a mixture is prepared comprising 100 parts by weight of a vulcanizable hydrocarbyl polymer containing hydroxyl groups, about 5 to about 100 parts by weight of silica and about 1 to about 10 parts by weight of magnesium oxide, the mixture is subjected to shearing at an elevated temperature, cooled, vulcanization active compounds are incorporated and then vulcanized. Such vulcanizates may be generally used especially where light-colored products are desired.

Vulcanizates containing silica

There is provided a process, and the product of that process, for the production of improved silica or calcium silicate filled rubbery vulcanizates in which a polymer containing hydroxyl groups is mixed with silica or calcium silicate and an amine, the mixture is subjected to shearing at an elevated temperature and vulcanized to yield the improved vulcanizates. Such vulcanizates may be used in place of carbon black vulcanizates.

Vulcanizates containing siliceous fillers

Vulcanizable compositions contain in admixture a synthetic high molecular weight polymer and a compatible low molecular weight polymer containing a multiplicity of antioxidant functional groups chemically bound to the polymer. Vulcanizates derived from these compositions have improved aging characteristics.

Polymeric antioxidants

Mineral oil compositions of improved characteristics comprise a major proportion of a mineral oil and a minor proportion of an isobutylene polymer containing bound 2,6-di-t-butyl phenol groups.

Synthetic rubber-black-plasticizer masterbatches are prepared in a particulate form, in contrast with their normal massed form, by a process which involves halogenating the rubber-black masterbatch after coagulation, but before addition of the plasticizer.
