Described herein are antimicrobial compounds identified via a high-throughput inhibitor screen of the in vitro activity of MipZ, which is an ATPase that regulates division site placement in. The compounds and their analogs are active against bacterial membranes and thus represent a novel class of antimicrobial compounds. The antimicrobial compounds are effective against both actively growing bacterial cells as well as bacterial cells in the stationary phase. The antimicrobial compounds are also effective against bacteria in biofilms.

Antimicrobial compounds, compositions and methods of use thereof

The present invention provides N-benzyl-3-sulfonamidopyrrolidines and related compounds, as well as pharmaceutical compositions and sanitizing compositions containing the same. The compounds and compositions are useful as antibiotic agents. Methods for making and using the compounds and compositions are also described.

Inhibitors of bacterial DNA gyrase with efficacy against gram-negative bacteria

An apparatus may comprise an optical fiber that includes a core region having a core thickness and a cladding layer having a cladding layer thickness. The core region and the cladding layer may have material characteristics suitable for suturing biological tissue. The core thickness and the cladding layer thickness may be configured to cause at least a portion of light propagating in the core region to propagate out of the optical fiber through the cladding layer. The apparatus may also comprise a light source optically coupled to the optical fiber and configured to provide the light for propagation in the core region of the optical fiber. The apparatus may also comprise a suturing device coupled to the optical fiber and configured to guide the optical fiber for suturing the biological tissue.

A method for preparing a body-mountable device is described. The method involves: forming a first polymer layer, the first polymer layer comprising a first liquid crystal elastomer; positioning a structure on the first polymer layer; and forming a second polymer layer over the first polymer layer and the structure, the second polymer layer comprises a second liquid crystal elastomer, wherein the first polymer layer defines a first side of a body-mountable device and the second polymer layer defines a second side of the body-mountable device opposite the first side, and wherein the application of an electric field across the first polymer layer and the second polymer layer causes the body-mountable device to polarize or depolarize in response to the electric field.

Body-mountable devices having an optical polarizer

Described herein are antimicrobial compounds identified via a high-throughput screen to identify compounds that produce anucleate cells inafter cell division occurs. Compound 1 (5-nonyloxytryptamine) and its analogs are small molecule inhibitors of the nucleoid occlusion system and/or proteins that are responsible for maintaining the structure of the chromosome. The antimicrobial compounds are useful to treat bacterial infections as well as to inhibit bacterial growth.

A body-mountable device may include a first polymer layer, a second polymer layer, and a structure that includes a sensor between the first and second polymer layers. Fabricating the body-mountable device may involve providing a respective surface layer on each of one or more molding pieces, forming a first polymer layer, positioning the structure on the first polymer layer and then forming, between molding pieces, the second polymer layer over the structure positioned on the first polymer layer. The surface layer of each molding piece may facilitate release of the polymer layer or fabricated body-mountable device without disruption to the embedded structure.

Methods for mold release of body-mountable devices including microelectronics

A system that includes a polymer adhesive containing metallic or other nanoparticles that resonate upon the application of electromagnetic radiation to product heat. Heat generated by particle resonance is used to cure the polymer adhesive. Applications include wound repair, and industrial, commercial and craft applications.

Light curable adhesives

Microfluidic devices and methods for conducting chemical assays and biological assays using microfluidic devices are disclosed. The microfluidic devices do not require external connections, tethers, tubing, valves and actuators. The microfluidic devices are useful in methods for analyzing a wide variety of chemical and biological assays such as, for example, molecule-molecule interactions, enzyme-substrate interactions, molecule identification, minimum inhibitory concentrations, therapeutically effective amounts, and toxic amounts.

Self-loading microfluidic device and methods of use

An eye-mountable device for measuring an intraocular pressure is provided. The device may include a transparent polymeric material having a concave surface configured to be removably mounted over a corneal surface of an eye, an antenna, an expandable member, a sensor and control electronics at least partially embedded in the transparent polymeric material. The expandable device is configured to expand and apply a force to the corneal surface and the sensor is configured to detect a resistance to deformation of the cornea in response to the applied force. The resistance to deformation of the cornea in response to the force applied by the expandable member is indicative of the intraocular pressure of the eye.

Described herein is a novel class of inhibitors of bacterial cell division. Several lines of evidence suggest the compounds disclosed herein specifically target the division process and have antibacterial activity in vitro and in vivo. The inhibitors are useful for treating subject in need of treatment for bacterial infections as will as for inhibiting bacterial growth, such as growth on contaminated surfaces.

Antimicrobial compositions and methods of use thereof

A body-mountable retinal sensing device includes an electrochemical sensor embedded in a polymeric material configured for mounting to a body surface, such as a cornea. The electrochemical sensor includes a working electrode, a reference electrode, and a reagent localized near the working electrode that selectively reacts with retinal. Application of a voltage between the working electrode and the reference electrode causes a current related to a concentration of retinal in a fluid to which the electrochemical sensor is exposed. The current is measured by the body-mountable device and wirelessly communicated.

Method and system for measuring retinal

A microfluidic valve assembly includes a structure defining a microfluidic fluid path and an actuator that can be moved between different positions controlling flow through the channel. In one embodiment, the actuator can be threaded into at least a portion of the structure, and can be moved rotationally between a first position, causing relatively greater constriction of a microfluidic fluid path, and a second position causing relatively lesser constriction of the fluid path. Actuating the actuator, e.g., by rotation, can deform material between the valve and the fluid path, thereby constricting at least a portion of the underlying fluid path and regulating the flow of a fluid in the fluid path. In another aspect, the invention provides a reservoir into which fluid can be placed and from which fluid can be introduced into a microfluidic system. In one embodiment, the reservoir is expandable and thereby able to store fluid under pressure for delivery to a microfluidic system.

Valves and reservoirs for microfluidic systems

Disclosed herein are a variety of microfluidic devices and solid, typically electrically conductive devices that can be formed using such devices as molds. In certain embodiments, the devices that are formed comprise conductive pathways formed by solidifying a liquid metal present in one or more microfluidic channels (such devices hereinafter referred to as 'microsolidic' devices). In certain such devices, in which electrical connections can be formed and/or reformed between regions in a microfluidic structure; in some cases, the devices/circuits formed may be flexible and/or involve flexible electrical components. In certain embodiments, the solid metal wires/conductive pathways formed in microfluidic channel(s) may remain contained within the microfluidic structure. In certain such embodiments, the conductive pathways formed may be located in proximity to other microfluidic channel(s) of the structure that carry flowing fluid, such that the conductive pathway can create energy (e.g. electromagnetic and/or thermal energy) that interacts withy and/or affects the flowing fluid and/or a component contained therein or carried thereby. In other embodiments, a microsolidic structure may be removed from a microfluidic mold to form a stand-alone structure. In certain embodiments, the solid metal structures formed may interact with light energy incident upon a structure or may be used to fabricate a light-weight electrode. Another aspect of the invention relates to the formation of self-assembled structures that may comprise these electrically conductive pathways/connections.
