A configuration message is received from a first computer system. In response to the configuration message, a first wireless device is enumerated on the first computer system as locally attached mass storage. A registration message is sent to a wireless network. File information about a shared file is received from a second wireless device. The second wireless device is enumerated on a second computer system as locally attached mass storage. A shared block of data is received from the second wireless device. The shared block of data is sent to the first computer system as data that is stored on a locally attached mass storage device.

Wireless drive file backup

A communication system, media, and methods that proxy location information to location unaware devices are provided. The communication system includes a wireless device that connects to a cellular network and personal area network. The cellular network includes a Global Positioning System server that provides location information based on the current location of the wireless device. A location-unaware device communicates with the wireless device to receive location information via the wireless device when the wireless device is within a predetermined distance of the location-unaware device. The location unaware device connects to a service database to store the location information and queries the service database to complete communication requests generated by a plain-old-telephone-system device that is connects to the location unaware device.

GPS proxy for location-unaware devices

A mobile communication device. The mobile communication device comprises a motherboard comprising a communication bus, a cellular radio frequency transceiver connected to the communication bus, a plurality of antennas, at least one of the antennas communicatively coupled to the cellular radio frequency transceiver, and a processor connected to the communication bus. The mobile communication device further comprises a radio frequency identity (RFID) chip connected to the communication bus, wherein the RFID chip comprises a memory, provides wireless read access to the memory, and provides write access to the memory to the communication bus. The mobile communication device further comprises an antenna switch to selectably couple at least one of the antennas to the RFID chip and an application that selects the antenna switch to couple one of the antennas to the RFID chip based on a state of the mobile communication device.

Radio frequency induced power reception management for a radio frequency identity (RFID) chip embedded in a mobile communication device

A delivery system, media, and method for communicating content to devices are provided. The delivery system includes a services aggregator and content aggregator for processing requests from the devices. The services aggregator processes the request to identify credentials for the devices that generate the request and to identify providers of content specified in the request. The content aggregator receives the content from the identified providers and formats the content based on limits imposed by the device. Because the devices are configured to allow the services aggregator and content aggregator to perform computational-intensive tasks associated with requesting and transmitting the content, the complexity and cost of the devices are minimized.

Delivering content to mobile clients

A wireless communication device comprises a processing system and a communication transceiver. The processing system is configured to determine a location and a velocity of the wireless communication device. The communication transceiver is configured to monitor an RF signal between the wireless communication device and a wireless access node to detect a reduction in RF signal quality. If the reduction in the RF signal quality is detected, the processing system is configured to process the location to determine if the wireless communication device is proximate to an edge sector of the wireless access node, and if so, process the velocity to determine if the wireless communication device is moving towards the wireless access node. The processing system is configured to inhibit a handoff to another wireless access node if the wireless communication device is moving towards the wireless access node, but if not moving towards the wireless access node, to initiate the handoff to the other wireless access node.

Edge sector handoff determination

Methods are provided for delivering packet data to a mobile station following inadvertent loss of a data-link-layer connection between a wireless-network entity and the mobile station. A first data-link-layer connection is established between (i) a wireless-network entity in a wireless network and (ii) a mobile station. The wireless-network entity responsively stores connection data pertaining to the first data-link-layer connection. An error condition is detected. Detecting the error condition comprises detecting that the wireless-network entity is incorrectly no longer storing the connection data pertaining to the first data-link-layer connection. Responsive to detecting the error condition, a second data-link-layer connection is established between the wireless-network entity and the mobile station.

What is disclosed is a method of operating a communications system. The method includes transferring a wireless local area network (WLAN) beacon signal from a wireless transceiver, where the WLAN beacon signal comprises packets identifying the WLAN. The method further provides receiving wireless wide area network (WWAN) signals into the wireless transceiver and determining WWAN characteristics. The WWAN characteristics comprise at least one of signal strength, data rate, and transceiver battery status. The method further includes, in the wireless transceiver, inserting a characteristic indicator into the packet headers of the WLAN beacon signal indicating the WWAN characteristics.

Wireless wide area network characteristics indicated over a wireless local area network

A communication session is established, via a wireless communication link, with a mobile communication device that is connected to a computer system. The mobile communication device is enumerated by the computer system as a locally attached mass storage device. An authentication executable file is sent to the mobile communication device. A response generated by the computer system executing the authentication executable file is received from the mobile communication device. Based on the response generated by the computer system executing the authentication executable file, access to a data file that is stored by a mass storage system via a network is granted.

User level security for an emulated removable mass storage device

Communication systems, media, and methods for authenticating and registering unauthenticated electronic devices are provided. The communication systems include authorized electronic devices that proxy authentication and registration for one or more unauthenticated electronic devices. The unauthenticated electronic devices connect to the authenticated electronic device over a personal area network and initiate a communication session&#x2014;via the authenticated electronic devices&#x2014;with an authentication server located on a secure broadband wireless network that connects the one or more authenticated electronic devices. When the authentication server authorizes the unauthenticated electronic devices to access the secure broadband wireless network, network configuration data is communicated to the unauthenticated electronic devices via the authenticated electronic devices.

Proxy registration and authentication for personal electronic devices

A wireless communication device transfers instructions to a host device over a USB connection responsive to being connected to the host device over the USB connection. The instructions direct the host device to enumerate the wireless communication device as a USB MSC device. The wireless communication device wirelessly transfers a device identifier for the wireless communication device to a wireless communication network responsive to being connected to the host device over the USB connection. The wireless communication network processes the device identifier to limit communication service for the wireless communication device to communications with a particular data storage system.

Emulating a removable mass storage device

Generally described, a method and system are provided for establishing a communication service. Upon detecting the insertion of a card into a wireless transceiver, a control system retrieves information from the card. The control system processes the information and selects communication service software for the card and communication service data for a communication network. The communication service software is transferred to the card and the communication service data is transferred to the communication network. The communication service software is installed on the card and one or more network elements in the communication network are provisioned.

Method and system for establishing communication services

A method and system to allow wireless devices, such as wirelessly-equipped digital cameras, to gain wireless packet-data connectivity and to interact with a media management server, such as a photo server. A wireless carrier distributes multiple devices all having the same set of radio access data (e.g., mobile identification number and electronic serial number), and all having shared or unique pre-registration data. Any such device can then readily use the shared radio access data to acquire radio connectivity and can then use the pre-registration data to gain access to the media management server. The first time such a device connects with the media management server using the pre-registration data, the server will engage in a online account registration session with the device and provision the device with post-registration data that the device can thereafter use to access the online account.
