Described are techniques for performing data storage system management of a data storage system. Using an active element manager component, a data storage system management operation in connection with a data storage device of the data storage system is performed, and context information is collected and provided to a target location in an external environment having connectivity to the data storage. The active element manager component provides for automatically connecting a current session associated with the data storage system management operation to the target location and receives one or more communications from the external environment.

Active element manager

A method is used in applying XAM processes. A set of content is received via any of a file system interface, a block based interface, an object based interface to an object addressable data storage system. An object derived from the set of content and having an object identifier is stored in the object addressable data storage system. The object is made available for retrieval via the object based interface using the object identifier.

Applying XAM processes

A method is used in controlling access to XAM metadata. An object derived from a set of content is stored in an object addressable data storage system. The object has an object identifier. Storage system specific metadata is added to the object. The storage system specific metadata is accessible when the object is retrieved using the object identifier. Based on sub-object access control, a retrieving application is allowed to have access to only a subset of the object.

Controlling access to XAM metadata

A method and system for use in managing data objects is disclosed. In at least one embodiment, the method and system comprises based on at least one policy set, determining that a data object stored on a first device is eligible for mobile enablement and a level of mobile enablement for the data object; mobile enabling the data object, wherein mobile enabling the data object comprises causing a mobile data storage tier associated with the first device to include the data object; and providing access to the data object to a second device, wherein access is defined by the level of mobile enablement.

Managing data objects

A method is used in supplying data storage services. For a set of applications running on an electronic system, an application service is provided to each application in the set to support operation of that application. The application service is separate from operating system services and security protection services provided by the electronic system. A data storage service provider being separate from the electronic system is communicated with to use resources of the data storage service provider in providing the application service to each application in the set.

The data storage system extracts one or more data elements from one or more messages included in the transmissions and determines at least one application executing on a component in the network in accordance with the one or more data elements.

Described are techniques for controlling access to objects. A template is selected. The template includes information specifying a role, one or more levels of expertise, and which objects and object information are accessible to said one or more levels of expertise. A first of the levels of expertise is selected. The template and the first level of expertise are associated with a user identifier. Access to objects and object information is restricted in accordance with the template when performing processing for the user identifier.

Multi-dimensional object model for storage management

Described are techniques for use in controlling information about a data storage system returned to an end user. A first set of information is sent from a first recipient location included in a hierarchy to a second recipient location included in the hierarchy. At the second recipient location, a second set of information is produced using information control criteria of said second recipient location. The second set of information is sent from the second recipient location to a component used to manage the data storage system.

Described are techniques for providing support in connection with a data storage system. An active element manager component is used to perform, a data storage system management operation. The active element manager component collects context information. The context information is transmitted from the data storage system to an external environment. User relevant information is received at the active element manager component from the external environment. The external environment determines the user relevant information in accordance with the context information and support information and services provided by the external environment. The user relevant information includes information about one or more types of support. The user relevant information is displayed via a user interface.

Active element management and support

A technique supports application operation. The technique involves discovering a set of applications running on an electronic system, and querying a user to identify which of the set of applications the user wishes to manage. The technique further involves, for each application identified by the user, providing an application service to that application to support operation of that application, the application service being separate from operating system services and security protection services provided by the electronic system.

Techniques for supporting application operation

Described are techniques for performing data storage system management of a data storage system. An active element manager component is provided that performs data storage system management operations. Using the active element management component, context information is collected. User relevant information is received by the active element manager component. The user relevant information includes information about a virtual user community relevant to a first user identifier. For an active element management session having the first user identifier, the user relevant information is displayed via a user interface. The user interface provides for display a first portion of the user relevant information about the virtual user community and a first connection to the external environment. Upon selection of the first portion, the active element manager component connects to a target location associated with the virtual user community and provides the context information to the external environment.

Creating user communities with active element manager

Described are techniques for performing data storage system management of a data storage system. An active element manager component is provided that performs data storage system management operations. User relevant information is received at said active element manager component from an external environment. The user relevant information includes information about an entity for purchase or license using said external environment which is relevant to a first user identifier. For an active element management session having said first user identifier, the user relevant information is displayed via a user interface. The user interface provides for display a first portion of said user relevant information. Upon selection of the first portion, the active element manager component connects to a target location in said external environment that is associated with the entity and provides context information to said external environment.

Described are techniques for provisioning storage of a data storage system for use by an application. One or more application provision requirements associated with a provisioning request to provision storage for use by the application are received. The one or more application provision requirements are translated, in accordance with application best practices for the application included in a policy, to one or more generic storage resource requirements. The one or more generic storage resource requirements are translated, in accordance with data storage system best practices included in said policy, to one or more physical data storage requirements. The physical data storage requirements include identification of one or more physical storage devices in said data storage system used in allocating storage to service said provisioning request. Storage is allocated for use by said application in accordance with said physical data storage requirements.
