A common group cell identifier is transmitted by adjacent base stations. Handover processing is minimized for mobile relays traveling along a predetermined path that traverses the adjacent base stations. A first base station along the path transmits a group cell identifier and a first single cell identifier within a first service area. An adjacent base station transmits the group cell identifier and a second single cell identifier within a second service area that at least partially overlaps the first service area. The mobile relay monitors the group cell identifier in certain situations and only performs a handover when the group cell identifier changes. As a result, no handovers are initiated as the mobile relay travels down the path since the group cell identifier transmitted by the base stations along the path are the same.

A portable communication device transmits, to a communication network, a radio configuration (RC) request indicator requesting assignment of a power saving radio configuration for reverse link transmissions. The power saving radio configuration is one a plurality of radio configurations including the power saving radio configuration and at least one other radio configuration defined by a communication standard different than the communication standard defining the power saving radio configuration. Average power consumption at the portable device when the portable communication device participates in the call using the power saving radio configuration is less than if the other radio configuration is used for the call.

A base station routes data between a wireless communication device and a local device through a local network. When a route-local indicator is received from the wireless communication device, the base station routes data through the local network to the local device without routing the data through a cellular network. Accordingly, the physical path of the data includes the base station and the local network and does not include cellular equipment other than the base station.

To improve WWAN coverage, an access node broadcasts overhead messages on a first channel covering a first channel environment and a second channel covering a second channel environment within a coverage region. The overhead messages carry network overhead parameters for allowing wireless mobile devices to acquire and maintain traffic channels within the cellular system. The overhead message channels are configured so that a user perceives uninterrupted wireless services while moving through different channel environments in the coverage region. In one embodiment, the overhead message channels are separate physical channels configured with different broadcast parameters to provide coverage in different environments. In another embodiment, the overhead parameter information is segregated into base and extended components that are encoded and layer modulated onto separate logical channels. Using layered modulation, wireless mobile devices can receive base components in poor coverage regions. The base components include overhead parameters for acquiring a WWAN channel.

An apparatus, system, and method manage a transmission antenna system by measuring an antenna performance indicator of an alternate antenna configuration during a reduced data rate transmission. After an antenna performance indicator is measured in a current (first) antenna system configuration, the antenna system is configured to an alternate (second) configuration during a reduced data rate transmission and the antenna performance indicator of the alternate (second) configuration is measured. The antenna performance indicators for both configurations are evaluated to determine the optimum antenna system configuration for transmission. If the alternate (second) configuration will result in decreased performance, the antenna system is changed back to the first antenna system configuration. Otherwise, the alternate (second) configuration is defined as the current configuration and the first antenna configuration is evaluated during reduced rate transmissions.

Apparatus, system, and method for transmission antenna switching in a portable communication device

An exemplary method for selecting one of a plurality of systems on a multi-mode device capable of communicating on a first air interface technology and a second air interface technology is disclosed. Initially, a carrier input associated with one of the first and second air interface technologies is received. The carrier input typically defines at least one system selection event. Next, a first network acquisition attempt of the other one of the first and second air interface technologies is triggered responsive to the system selection event. The results of the first network acquisition attempt are determined and stored, and subsequently used for subsequent system selection determinations between the first and second air interface technologies.

A system and method are provided for enabling and performing scheduling for wireless devices supporting multiple users or devices. The system has a wireless subscriber device that is enabled to support multiple users or devices. The wireless system may operate accordingly to a wireless air interface such as WCDMA, CDMA2000, GSM, or other wireless technology. The wireless device has a message generator, which is configured to generate a multi-user message. The device transmits the multi-user message to the network. The network receives the multi-user message and begins to schedule network resources to the device as a device supporting multiple users.

A detecting base station transmits user zone information to wireless communication device when the presence of a wireless communication device is detected. A detecting base station receives a detection signal, such as an uplink signal, transmitted from the wireless communication device to determine the presence of the wireless communication device. The detecting base station notifies the core network the detection by transmitting a device proximity message and, after receiving authorization from the network, transmits the user zone information within the broadcast channel used by the originating base station communicating to the wireless communication device.

An apparatus, system, and method for managing geographical location information of a portable communication device by determining and storing the geographic location information while registered on a cellular communication system in response to detecting an available wireless local area network (WLAN) system. When the portable communication device is communicating on the cellular communication system and a WLAN access point is detected, a location determination procedure is performed and the resulting geographical location information is stored at the portable communication device. When the portable communication device is communicating with a wireless access point of a WLAN system, and a second access point is detected, the portable communication device registers to the cellular communication network, if not already registered, and performs the geographical location determination procedure. Geographical location information is transmitted to a public safety answering point (PSAP) or network entity when an emergency call is executed.

Apparatus, system, and method for location information management in a portable communication device

A base station is configured to reduce interference with other base stations and/or devices in a multi-cell wireless network. The base station includes a wireless interface, detector and controller. To reduce interference, the wireless interface may provide services to a first wireless communication device (WCD) using a pilot signal emitted from the base station at a reduced power level. In the reduced pilot signal mode, when the detector detects a second WCD within the base station's service area, the controller increases the pilot signal's power level above the reduced power level in order to establish communications with the second WCD. Upon successfully connecting to the first and second WCDs, the base station may again reduce the pilot signal's power level to reduce interference with other base stations or wireless devices.

In response to detecting a call attempt for a priority call on the originating wireless network by an initiating access terminal, at least one active call having a priority level less than the priority call is transferred to an alternate technology wireless network. If a call attempt is placed when a transfer threshold has been exceeded, candidate transferring terminals are identified based on multi-mode capabilities and network conditions. One or more of the candidate transferring terminals engaged in calls that have a priority level less than the priority call are transferred from the originating wireless network to the alternate technology wireless network when the transfer threshold is exceeded.

A multimode wireless communication device and method for having the device detect a communication access technology is described. The multimode wireless device comprises a multimode transceiver module, a CAT detection module, and at least one CAT threshold level corresponding to each CAT. The multimode transceiver module is operatively coupled to a first antenna. The multimode transceiver module comprises at least two communication access technology (CAT) receiver modules operatively coupled to at least one antenna, wherein each CAT receiver module complies with a receiver requirement. The CAT detection module is operatively coupled to one of the CAT transceiver antenna and the CAT detection module is configured to detect a plurality of CAT RF energy levels associated with each CAT receiver module without activating the corresponding CAT transceiver module.

Detecting the presence of multiple communication access technologies

An antenna system comprises a receive diversity antenna system and a configurable antenna arrangement. Incoming signals are received through the receive diversity antenna system and outgoing signals are transmitted through the configurable antenna arrangement. A controller generates control signals to adjust the configurable antenna arrangement to change the transmission performance characteristics of the configurable antenna arrangement. The configurable antenna arrangement may be a smart antenna, a plurality of antennas, or a configurable antenna where transmission characteristics change in response to control signals.
