Training a random forest model to relate settings of a network security device to undesirable behavior of the network security device is provided. A determination of a corresponding set of settings associated with each region of lowest incident probability is made using a random forest. The plurality of identified desired settings are presented as options for changing the network security device from the as-is settings to the identified desired settings. A choice is received from the plurality of options. The choice informs the random forest model. The random forest model ranks for a new problematic network security device the plurality of options for changing the new problematic network security device from as-is settings to desired settings by aggregating an identified cost of individual configuration changes, thereby identifying a most cost-effective setting for the network security device to achieve a desired output of the network security device.

Deriving optimal actions from a random forest model

In an approach to assisting database management, a computer generates one or more combinations of values of one or more database configuration parameters. The computer associates each of the one or more generated combinations of values with an incident probability. The computer defines relationships between the one or more generated combinations and the associated incident probabilities. The computer stores the defined relationships into an object representable as a multi-dimensional matrix, whose dimensions correspond to a plurality of database configuration parameters used to generate the combinations of values. The computer traverses the object to identify a path in the matrix. The computer returns the identified path for enabling subsequent interpretation thereof as a rule for passing from a first database configuration, corresponding to the first one of the one or more generated combinations, to a second database configuration, corresponding to the second one of the one or more generated combinations.

Assisting database management

In one embodiment, a computer-implemented method includes obtaining incident data related to a plurality of servers, including a first server. Configuration data is obtained for each of the plurality of servers. The configuration data includes information about a set of one or more configuration items of the first server. A predictive modeler is trained to predict incident characteristics, based at least in part on the incident data and the configuration data. A modification is selected to the set of configuration items of the first server. Predicted incident characteristics of the first server are simulated, by a computer processor, based on the selected modifications. It is recommended that the selected modifications be made to the first server if predetermined criteria are met by the simulation.

System recommendations based on incident analysis

A data storage device comprises a storage medium, at least one probe designed for creating indentation marks in the storage medium, a control unit designed for creating a control parameter (CTRL) acting on the probe resulting in the creation of one indentation mark. The control unit is further designed for modifying the control parameter (CTRL), if at least a given number of consecutive indentation marks with a given minimum distance between each other should be created. According to the method the control parameter (CTRL) is modified if at least a given number of consecutive marks with a given minimum distance between each other should be created.

Data storage device and method for operating a data storage system

An optical waveguide element having a cladding layer formed on a substrate and at least one waveguide core formed in the cladding layer for transmitting an optical signal. Optical waveguide element with controlled birefringence

A method of inducing phase changes in a FIR filter is provided. The FIR filter consists of a concatenation of tunable couplers and tunable delay lines made of planar waveguides fabricated in SiON technology, forming a plurality of interferometers, at least one of which carries a heater on at least one of its waveguide arms. The method includes the step of exposing at least one of the arms of the interferometers to an irradiation at UV or a smaller wavelength, thereby inducing a change in the refractive index of the waveguide arms which induces the phase difference change. The method provides a procedure that will lead to temperature-stable changes of the refractive index of the waveguides. The resulting device is temperature-stable such that it can be afterwards be heated with chromium heaters to dynamically tune its spectral response without destroying the UV-induced changes.

Pretrimming of tunable finite response (FIR) filter

A method for manufacturing an optical device with a defined total device stress and a therefrom resulting defined birefringence and a therefrom resulting defined optical polarization dependence is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a lower cladding layer of an amorphous material with a first refractive index is provided and above that an upper cladding layer of an amorphous material with a second refractive index, which latter is manufactured from a material which is tunable in its stress. Between the lower and upper cladding layer an optical waveguide core is manufactured comprising an amorphous material having a third refractive index which is larger than the first and second refractive index. The optical waveguide core is thermally annealed, after which it has a defined waveguide core stress. The upper cladding layer is manufactured to have a cladding layer stress that together with the waveguide core stress results in the total device stress.

Method for manufacturing an optical device with a defined total device stress

A method for manufacturing an optical device with a defined total device stress, birefringence and optical polarization dependence is disclosed. The method comprises first providing a tower cladding layer of an amorphous material with a first refractive index and then providing above the lower cladding layer an upper cladding layer of an amorphous material with a second refractive index. An optical waveguide core comprising an amorphous material having a third refractive index (larger than the first refractive index and the second refractive index) is provided between the lower and the upper cladding layers. The upper cladding layer is thermally annealed by keeping the upper cladding layer at a first temperature, then raising the temperature to a second temperature, maintaining the second temperature for an annealing time period, and lowering the temperature to a third temperature, after which the temperature is lowered to a fourth temperature.

An optical device with a defined total device stress (&sgr; ) and a therefrom resulting defined birefringence in order to obtain a well defined optical polarization dependence is proposed. It comprises a lower cladding layer ( ) with a first refractive index (n ), thereon an upper cladding layer ( ) with a second refractive index (n ) and between an optical waveguide core ( ) with a third refractive index (n ) which is bigger than the first refractive index (n ) and the second refractive index (n ). The optical waveguide core ( ) has a waveguide core stress (&sgr; ) resulting from the manufacturing process and the upper cladding layer ( ) is manufactured to have an inherent cladding layer stress (&sgr; ) which together with the waveguide core stress (&sgr; ) results in the total device stress (&sgr; ).
