Device and a method for transmitting communications in a satellite network using beam-hopping

A system and method for regenerative satellite communications between a gateway of a terrestrial communication network and a user terminal via a communications satellite are described. The system includes a distributed regenerative modulator having a first portion of modulator components arranged at the gateway, and a second portion of modulator components arranged at the communications satellite. The first portion of the modulator components applies a first part of modulation functions to the information data carried by an uplink signal at the gateway, while the second portion of the modulator components applies a second part of modulation functions to the information data at the satellite to generate a down-link signal for transmitting it to the user terminal. The first portion of the components performs specific signal processing operations, which are only suitable for processing a waveform of a specific type. The second portion of the components performs only general signal processing operations which do not depend on the waveform used for modulation.

System and method for regenerative satellite communications

A beamforming circuit for receiving and/or transmitting one or more (typically a plurality of) beams. The beamforming circuit includes: an antenna I/O module having antenna ports; a data bus connection for connecting to a data bus for communication of data streams of one or more beams to be produced (received or transmitted); a beamforming module including a plurality of beam-forming channels connectable in between the data bus connection and the antenna ports for processing signals communicated between them to introduce controllable shifts (e.g. time-delays and/or phase-shifts) in order to beamform the processed signals, being received and/or transmitted. Whereby the beamforming circuit includes a cascade I/O module enabling to connect one or more additional beam-forming circuits to the beamforming circuit, in a 'vertical' cascade, to thereby enable forming of one or more additional beams by the beamforming modules of the one or more additional beamforming circuits. The cascade I/O module includes a plurality of cascade ports respectively connected to the plurality of antenna ports via a plurality of corresponding bypass channels. Each antenna port is connectable, in parallel, to at least one respective bypass channel and to one or more of the beamforming channels of the beamforming circuit, via a signal splitter/combiner. In transmission configuration/mode, the signal splitter/combiner is operable for combining signals from the bypass channel and the one or more beamforming channels, which are associated with the respective antenna port; and in reception configuration/mode, the signal splitter/combiner is configured and operable for splitting the signals of the respective antenna port to form duplicates thereof at the respective bypass channel and the one or more beamforming channels associated with the respective antenna port.

Phased array system and method

Method and an apparatus for use in a satellite communications network

A method and system/circuit for multi-beamforming signal processing are provided. The circuit includes a plurality of basic modules associated with a plurality of transducers. Each basic module includes a first and second processing stages operative for introducing time delays of higher and lower temporal resolutions to the signals processed thereby respectively, and a path selector multiplexer module managing the signal coupling between the first and second stages. The first processing stage is connectable to one of the transducers via a first port and includes a network of first type time delay channels defining L signal paths operative at a relatively high sampling rate and adapted for providing L respectively different time delays of high temporal resolution. The second processing stage includes an array of N second type time delay channels operable for shifting signals processed thereby by any number up-to K samples of a lower sampling rate.

Multi-beamforming system and method

A method and a system are provided for use in a satellite communications network in which broadcasting services are provided to a mobile terminal. The method comprises: duplicating bits comprised in communications which the satellite is about to broadcast, thereby forming a first stream of bits and a second stream of bits; conveying the first stream of bits in an encoded form along a satellite channel whereas the second stream of bits is conveyed in an encoded form along a terrestrial channel; and combining bits conveyed along the satellite channel with bits conveyed along the terrestrial channel in order to obtain a combined stream of bits.

Method and a system for use in a satellite communications system

The present invention provides communication technology (transmitter and receiver systems) for communicating data from the transmitter to one or more terminals' receivers over one or more communication channels. The communication channel is transmitted in burst communication mode such that transmission signal includes transmission data time slots at which one or more of said communication frames are encoded in the signal and one or more recess time slots between them. The communication receiver is adapted for processing signals of the burst mode communication channel and is operable for processing at least a portion of a signal received in the communication channel after a recess time period during which communication frames were not transmitted to determine a carrier frequency of the communication channel, based on a single communication frame appearing in the communication channel after the recess time period.

Method and system for satellite communication

A novel digital baseband beam forming system is disclosed including a plurality of digital baseband beam forming channels configured and operable for connecting via channel ports to a plurality of antenna channels associated with respective antenna elements for at least one of transmitting and receiving through the plurality of antenna elements one or more waveform signals encoding data streams. The digital baseband beam forming channels are configured and operable to apply at least one of phase and time delays of selective magnitudes to baseband signals associated with data streams encoding the waveform signals transmitted and/or received by the plurality of antenna elements, thereby beamforming said waveform signals to produce, by said waveforms, one or more data encoded beams associated with respective directions of propagation and encoding said data streams respectively. The digital baseband beam forming system may be implemented in chip (e.g. Silicon chip) and may be configured and operable for constructing scalable array comprising a plurality of such beamforming chips connectable to a respective group of antenna elements of an antenna array for carrying out at least one of transmitting and receiving beam formed waveform signals by the respective group of antenna elements.

Digital beam forming system and method

Method and system of calibrating antenna array communication are disclosed. A calibration process is used to obtain signatures by at least one antenna element of the antenna array under idealized operational conditions responsive to a calibration sequence transmitted by at least one other antenna element of the antenna array under, to obtain signatures by the at least one antenna element in an operational state of the array responsive to transmission of the calibration sequence by the at least one other antenna element, to compare the signatures obtained under the idealized conditions and in the operational state, and generate calibration data based thereon.

Calibration techniques for an antenna array

A method includes processing error correction encoded data by a first processing chain of a transmitter. The processing includes interleaving a first portion of the error correction encoded data with respect to a first interleaving period to generate a first output signal. Interleaving the first portion includes de-multiplexing the first portion among multiple branches having respective delays in accordance with a distribution order and re-multiplexing delayed data from the branches to form the first output signal. The method includes processing the error correction encoded data by a second processing chain of the transmitter without use of interleaving to generate a second output signal. The method includes multiplexing the first output signal and the second output signal into a multiplexed stream. The method also includes transmitting the multiplexed stream from the transmitter over a communication channel to a receiver.

Broadcasting of digital video to mobile terminals

The present invention provides a method for reducing interference to transmissions, occurring due to other transmissions sent from/to neighboring satellites using same frequencies and/or interference that occur due to other communications transmitted along different satellite's beams using the same frequencies, wherein the method comprises the step of replacing full dummy frames that should be transmitted in a TDM continuous satellite forward channel, by dummy frames' headers with or without a pilot sequence. Also, the dummy frames' headers and the pilot sequence if available, may be transmitted at a reduced power.

Method for reducing interference in a satellite communications network

A method and a device are provided for use at one or more links of a communication network along which communications are exchanged under extremely low SNR conditions. The method comprises a step of transmitting an extended communication frame, which comprises a plurality of basic frames, wherein each of the plurality of basic frames included in the extended frame, comprises the same payload as all other basic frames included in the plurality of basic frames.
