An electronic device that provides installation instructions is described. During operation, the electronic device may automatically generate a radio-frequency project plan for a network in an environment using a radio-frequency model and a model corresponding to at least a portion of the environment. Then, based at least in part on the radio-frequency project plan, the electronic device may interactively provide the installation instructions to an installer while a given access point in the access points is being installed in the environment. Moreover, after the given access point is installed, the electronic device may validate the given access point. Next, the electronic device may perform automatic testing of the given access point. Furthermore, the electronic device may provide a comparison of estimated communication performance of the given access point in the radio-frequency project plan and measured communication performance of the given access point.

Automated design, installation and validation of a wireless network

During operation, an electronic device may perform measurements associated with an environment. Then, the electronic device may create a model that represents the environment, where the model specifies a two-dimensional (2D) or a three-dimensional (3D) geometric layout of the environment and/or estimated parameters associated with radio-frequency properties of at least a portion of the environment. Moreover, the electronic device may design a wireless network for use in the environment, where the designing includes determining radio-frequency characteristics in a band of frequencies associated with the wireless network based at least in part on the model, and the wireless network is predicted to achieve one or more target communication-performance metrics. Next, the electronic device may provide the design information associated with the design that specifies the wireless network, where the design information includes one or more wireless-network components and one or more locations of the wireless-network components in the environment.

Methods for managing access to a consortium of networks

During operation, an electronic device may emulate client functionality associated with a virtual client in a wireless network, where emulating the client functionality includes generating a first frame that is compatible with a wireless communication protocol and is associated with fictious wireless communication with the virtual client. Then, the electronic device may provide, to a computer, a second frame that includes at least a portion of the first frame, where the second frame is compatible with a wired communication protocol. Next, the electronic device may receive, from the computer, a response message based at least in part on the first frame, where the response message includes information associated with a service provided by the computer. Moreover, the electronic device may assess the service based at least in part on the information and may selectively perform the remedial action based at least in part on the assessment.

In order to leverage an enterprise-hosted network (EHN) associated with an entity, a communication technique may dynamically customize an application on a portable electronic device. In particular, the portable electronic device may discover and then may connect to the EHN using a quarantine zone that restricts access to the EHN. After providing valid credentials to establish a level of trust with the EHN, the portable electronic device may receive a request for authentication and authorization information. In response to the request, the portable electronic device may provide a credential to the EHN. Next, the portable electronic device may receive provisioning information that customizes the application on the portable electronic device to a venue associated with the entity. The provisioning information may include a connection setting associated with the application on the portable electronic device, which allows the portable electronic device to connect to the EHN outside of the quarantine zone.

A technique for testing wireless-local-area-network (WLAN) infrastructure is described. In particular, a radio-frequency abstraction layer (RFAL) in a physical instance of an electronic device is used to simulate the physical layer communication hardware and radio channels. RFAL allows frames in initial packets that are compatible with a WLAN communication protocol (such as an IEEE 802.11 standard) to be encapsulated in the data-link layer into additional packets that are compatible with a network communication protocol (such as an IEEE 802.3 standard). These additional packets can include information that characterizes transmission of the packet through a simulated radio-frequency environment so that the software stack associated with a physical or virtual instance of an electronic device can be exercised as if the packet had been received over a wireless connection. Then, the additional packets can be communicated via Ethernet (i.e., without radio-frequency communication) among virtual instances of access points, clients and/or WLAN controllers.

A network access device for facilitating the troubleshooting of network connectivity problems on a directly connected client device is provided. In one embodiment, the network access device can receive, from the client device, a request directed to a preconfigured web address associated with the network access device. In response to the request, the network access device can generate a web page comprising a ticket number for the client device and a link or form element for submitting a support request and can transmit the web page to the client device. The network access device can subsequently receive a submission of the support request from the client device. In response to the submission, the network access device can automatically collect diagnostic information pertaining to the client device. The network access device can then transmit the diagnostic information and the ticket number to one or more remote servers.

Systems and methods here may be used for authorizing network access including using a controller with a processor and memory, the controller in communication with a first network for controlling access to the first network. From a user equipment having a user registered in a visitor network, an access request to access the first network is received, wherein the access request includes a MAC address of the user equipment. Based on a query performed in a subscriber repository, if the received MAC address is not found, a credential request is sent to the user equipment, and a credential is received from the user equipment. A single use code is generated, stored in the subscriber repository, and sent to the user equipment via a trusted channel. A new code and a new credential are received via the visitor network, and are compared. If the new code and the single use code match, the new credential is registered for re-use by the user equipment.
