A pourable and/or sprayable polyurea elastomer is disclosed. The elastomer includes an isocyanate, an amine terminated polyoxyalkylene polyol, and a chain extender. The isocyanate is preferably a quasi-prepolymer of an isocyanate and a material selected from at least one polyol, a high molecular weight polyoxyalkyleneamine or a combination thereof. The chain extender includes at least di(methylthio)-toluene diamine. A method for improving the flowability of a polyurea elastomer, thereby permitting the elastomer to be sprayed or, optionally, poured, is also disclosed.

A method of improving the physical properties of high density reinforced reaction injection molded microcellular or solid elastomers is disclosed. The method involves placing an inert filler material wholly in the isocyanate component of a two component reaction system where the other component contains predominantly polyol before mixing the components to effect reaction. This modification will result in an improvement in tensile strength and thermal dimensional stability when compared to placing the inert filler material in the polyol component before reaction.

Reinforced reaction injection molded elastomers

Mixtures of aromatic polyols containing ester functionalities suitable for use as polyol extenders in polyurethane foams prepared by reacting dibasic acid residues with an alkylene glycol residue, the reaction product of which is reacted with recycled polyethylene terephthalate into which scrap RIM is dissolved, are described. Scrap RIM is recycled reaction injection molded polyurethane material which has been chopped or pulverized. From about 10 to 50 wt. % of the resulting modified extender polyol mixture may be scrap RIM. Surprisingly, the process is non-catalytic. These novel polyols may be blended with conventional polyols to yield excellent rigid foams, thus serving as useful polyol extenders.

A method for making a high strength composite of a reinforcing mat impregnated with reaction injection molded (RIM) polyurethane elastomer is disclosed. The method comprises placing the reinforcing mat in a mold cavity and injecting into the mold cavity a formulation capable of forming a reaction injection molded polyurethane elastomer comprising a polyol of above about 500 equivalent weight, a chain extending agent, a delayed action catalyst and a polyisocyanate.

The reaction injection molded (RIM) elastomer is made by injecting exactly two streams via a RIM machine into a mold cavity of the desired configuration, a formulation comprising in the first stream amine terminated polyethers of greater than 1,500 molecular weight, an amine terminated chain extender and an internal mold release agent, and in the second stream an aromatic polyisocyanate. The invention covers a method for making reaction injection molded polyurethanes of improved properties. The elastomeric products having superior heat distortion and tear properties comprise the reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate, a high molecular weight polyol and a chain extending agent. Said polyol providing said improved properties is a poly(oxybutyleneoxyethylene) glycol having a molecular weight range of about 2,000-6,000. The polyurethane elastomer is prepared by injecting the above three agents through a RIM head into a mold cavity of the desired configuration. The invention is a reaction injection molded polyurethane of improved properties comprising the cured reaction product of a high molecular weight polyhydric polyether, a low molecular weight active hydrogen containing compound of at least two functionality and a polyisocyanate. The reaction product is cured by subjecting it to an ambient temperature of from about 290.degree.-425.degree. F. for a time sufficient to achieve an improvement in properties.
