A method to treat a human patient including: advancing a catheter through a natural airway of the patient and positioning a distal portion of the catheter in the natural airway of a lung of the patient to a target region in the lung, injecting a conductive hypertonic saline solution having a concentration of at least 5% of sodium chloride by weight/volume from the distal portion of the catheter into the target region; delivering energy from the distal portion into the conductive hypertonic saline solution in the target region, wherein the energy heats the liquid in the portion of the airway, and ablating the target region with the heated liquid.

A system for performing an interventional procedure includes an interventional instrument and a control system. The invention relates to an ablation catheter for treatment of a patient's tissue, for example for a PVI procedure on a patient's heart, comprising an elongated catheter shaft and an ablation portion being arranged at a distal end of the catheter shaft with a plurality of electrodes accommodated along the ablation portion, wherein the ablation portion comprises at least two loop sections forming a three-dimensional spiral. In order to increase safety of ablation treatment, spare adjacent tissue (e.g. nerves, vessels, esophagus) and shorten ablation time, a pitch, or clearance of two neighboring loop sections is greater than an ionization threshold of the medium around the distal section, for example blood or gases resulted from electrolysis. A system for performing an interventional procedure includes an interventional instrument and a control system. The instrument includes a catheter and an interventional tool extendable from the catheter. The control system includes a processor and a memory comprising machine-readable instructions that cause the control system to: receive a model of an anatomic structure, the anatomic structure including a plurality of passageways; identify a target structure in the model; receive information about a maximum extension length the interventional tool can be extended relative to a distal tip of the catheter; based upon the received information about the maximum extension length, identify a planned deployment location for positioning the distal tip of the catheter to perform the interventional procedure on the target structure; determine a navigational path for the catheter to the target structure; and navigate the catheter to the identified planned deployment location via computer control or based on user input.
