A liquid crystal display according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention includes: a first substrate and an opposing second substrate; a first pixel electrode and a second pixel electrode disposed in a pixel area, on the first substrate, and including a plurality of branch electrodes; and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first and second electrodes. Branches electrode of the first pixel electrode and the second pixel electrode are interlaced. The first pixel electrode has an extension disposed adjacent to the center of the pixel area, and a minimum distance between the extension and the adjacent branch electrode is different from an average minimum between the adjacent branch electrodes.

Vertical alignment mode liquid crystal display and method of manufacturing the same

A touch screen display apparatus includes a first substrate including a pixel electrode and a lower sensor electrode, a second substrate facing the first substrate and including a common electrode and an upper sensor electrode facing the lower sensor electrode, a liquid crystal layer interposed between the substrates, a first alignment layer disposed on the pixel electrode and the common electrode, a second alignment layer disposed on the lower sensor electrode, and a third alignment layer disposed on the upper sensor electrode. The second or third alignment layers aligns the liquid crystal layer in a different direction from a direction the first alignment layer aligns the liquid crystal layer. When pressure is applied onto a point on the first or second substrate, a distance and a capacitance between the lower sensor electrode and the upper sensor electrode at the point are changed to detect a position of the point.

Touch screen display apparatus and method of manufacturing the same

A thin film transistor array panel is provided, which includes: a substrate; a plurality of first signal lines formed on the substrate; a plurality of second signal lines intersecting the first signal lines to define pixel areas; first and second pixel electrodes disposed substantially in a pixel area and having different areas; a plurality of thin film transistors connected to the first and the second signal lines and at least one of the first and the second pixel electrodes; a coupling electrode overlapping the second pixel electrode; and a tilt direction defining member for determining tilt directions of liquid crystal molecules formed on the substrate.

The invention is directed to an improved flat panel liquid crystal display (LCD). In one embodiment the improved LCD includes a liquid crystal layer that completely fills a gap formed between a color filter array and a thin film transistor (TFT) array. The TFT array includes a substrate that includes one or more pixel areas. Each pixel area may be divided into at least two pixel sub-areas. Each pixel sub-area is configured to have a different electric field than its counterparts, such that mutual compensation in the sub-areas decreases distortion of a gamma curve and improves lateral visibility of the flat panel display. In one embodiment, a first pixel electrode is formed in a first of the at least two pixel sub-areas; and a second pixel electrode is formed in a second of the at least two pixel sub-areas.

The method includes forming a transistor having a gate line, a semiconductor layer, an insulating layer between the gate line and the semiconductor layer, a source electrode, and a drain electrode; forming a pixel electrode comprising a first sub-pixel electrode and a second sub-pixel electrode; forming an auxiliary coupling electrode connected to the second sub-pixel electrode through a first contact hole; and forming the first sub-pixel electrode through a second contact hole connected to the drain electrode of the transistor. The auxiliary coupling electrode and the first sub-pixel electrode overlap each other such that the second sub-pixel electrode is capacitively coupled to the first sub-pixel electrode and the auxiliary coupling electrode and the electrode part form a capacitor.

A display panel includes an opposite substrate and an array substrate, the array substrate includes a first base substrate, a plurality of pixels and a color filter. The opposite substrate includes a second base substrate, a first black matrix and a second black matrix. The first black matrix maintains an interval between the second base substrate and the array substrate, and the first black matrix is formed to correspond to a display area to block light. The second black matrix includes a first area and a second area. The first area surrounds the color filter and the second area surrounds the first area. The second area includes a height different from a height of the first area when viewed in a plan view.

Display panel and method of fabricating the same

In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, a LCD panel includes an active matrix substrate, a patterned substrate disposed opposite to the active matrix substrate, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the active matrix substrate and the patterned substrate. The active matrix substrate includes a transistor, a pixel electrode having a first sub-pixel electrode and a second sub-pixel electrode, a first electrode connected to the second sub-pixel electrode, and a second electrode connected to the source electrode of the transistor and the first sub-pixel electrode. The second electrode is coupled to the first electrode so as to form a capacitor. The active matrix substrate can include a protective insulating layer between the second electrode and the pixel electrode, and the protective insulating layer can include a color filter layer. The semiconductor layer of the transistor can extends such that a portion of the semiconductor layer has the same boundary as the second electrode. The patterned substrate has an aperture that divides the liquid crystal layer into a plurality of domains. The first and second electrodes are formed along a portion of the aperture of the patterned substrate.
