A single ply reinforced thermoplastic composite which may be annealed in a predetermined shape. At least one layer of plastic material is impregnated on a layer of reinforcing material to form a single flexible ply. The ply is formed to the predetermined shape, such as a roll, and annealed in that shape such that the ply returns to the shape when released after being extended therefrom. One preferred thermoplastic material is polyphenylene sulfide. The sheet is well adatped for applications such as aircraft window shades. A method of manufacturing such a composite sheet is also disclosed.

Single ply reinforced thermoplastic composite

Novel poly(arylene sulfide) polymers having enhanced curing properties are produced by treating a poly(phenylene sulfide) polymer (1) at least one alkali metal sulfide; and (2) at least one N-alkyl lactam followed by the addition of (3) at least one polyhaloaromatic compound. The resulting polymers can be fabricated into shaped products having desirable properties.

The physical and chemical properties of arylene sulfide polymer articles are improved by contacting with a strong oxidizing agent followed by a step-wise heat treatment at temperatures below the melting point of the polymer.

Molded polymer treatment

A flame retarded transparent resinous block copolymer comprising a transparent block copolymer containing about 50 to about 95 weight percent polymerized monovinyl aromatic compound and about 5 to about 50 weight percent polymerized conjugated diene and a flame retarding amount of a flame retardant selected from certain tris(bromoalkyl)phosphates or isocyanurates.

The high temperature properties of an article having at least a portion of its surface formed of an arylene sulfide polymer is improved by treating such article with a treating agent selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hypochlorite, sulfuric acid, chlorine, sulfuryl chloride, nitrogen dioxide, chromium trioxide, alkali metal permanganates and nitric acid under conditions of concentration of treating agent, time and temperature to effect the desired improvement. Treated articles such as coated substrates and moldings exhibit increased high temperature surface hardness. Articles such as fibers, yarns, fabrics and films exhibit infusibility at 700.degree. F. (371.degree. C.).

Chemical treatment of poly(arylene sulfide)-containing articles

Materials are bonded together by means of an adhesive which comprises a blend of a poly(arylene sulfide) and polytetrafluoroethylene. Coatings of the adhesive can be applied to each of the materials to be bonded and partially cured. The coated surfaces can then be placed in contact with one another and curing of the adhesive completed.

Monohaloalkenyl benzoates are halogenated to trihalo-substituted alkyl esters of benzoic acid. The halogenated compounds impart flame retardant properties to a variety of polymeric materials.

The fire-retardant properties of polyolefin compositions containing certain phosphorus-containing flame retardants are increased by incorporating an amine hydrohalide salt, e.g., ethylenediamine dihydrobromide.

Poly(amic acid)s convertible to polyimides are used as primers for copper-containing substrates prior to coating the substrate with an arylene sulfide polymer, thereby resulting in improved adhesion of the arylene sulfide polymer coating after curing to the substrate.

The tendency of poly(arylene sulfide) resin to cause mold corrosion upon molding is inhibited by admixing with said poly(arylene sulfide) resin prior to the molding thereof a suitable amount of ammonia precursor.

Flame retardant polyolefins

Arylene sulfide polymers are brominated by contacting the polymer with a free oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a copper ion, an alkali metal ion, and a bromide ion under reaction conditions which form a brominated arylene sulfide polymer. The brominated polymer has reduced flammability characteristics and is useful as a flame retardant additive as well as an ultraviolet stabilizer for polymers.

A phosphorus-containing flame retardant for synthetic resins is produced when suitable amounts of a phosphorus oxide compound of the formula (P.sub.2 O.sub.5).sub.0.5.sub.-1.0 (H.sub.2 O).sub.0.0.sub.-1.5, melamine, and at least one saturated open-chain polyol containing from 5 to 15 carbon atoms and from 4 to 8 hydroxyl groups are combined and heated under such conditions that the resulting product when incorporated into a synthetic resin will not cause significant foaming of the synthetic resin composition when it is subjected to molding conditions but will still impart flame resistance to said synthetic resin.
