Polyester compositions are disclosed that include polyester polymers or copolymers having incorporated therein metallic nickel particles that improve the reheat properties of the compositions. Processes for making such compositions are also disclosed. The nickel particles may be incorporated in the polyester by melt compounding, or may be added at any stage of the polymerization, such as during the melt-phase of the polymerization. A range of particle sizes may be used, as well as a range of particle size distributions. The polyester compositions are suitable for use in packaging made from processes in which a reheat step is desirable.

A polyester composition, a preform, and a bottle, containing a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate or polyethylene naphthalate and activated carbon to enhance the rate for reheating the composition is provided. Activated carbon may be added in the presence of active phosphorus containing compounds, or at any stage in the melt phase after prepolymerization and after the polyester polymer is solidified. Polyester concentrates containing activated carbon may be added to bulk polyesters to make preforms suitable for blowing into bottles.

In a process for producing a reactor grade polyester, a poly(1,4-cyclohexylenedimethylene 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) has a reduced amount of isomerization of the trans-isomer to the cis-isomer of 1,4-dimethylcyclohexanedicarboxylate and an increased polymerization rate by the addition of a phosphorus-containing compound to the reaction process. In step (a) of the process, a diacid comprising at least 80 mole percent 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid or an ester derivative of the diacid comprising at least 80 mole percent 1,4-dimethylcyclohexanedicarboxylate is reacted with a glycol comprising at least 80 mole percent 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol at a temperature sufficient to effect esterification for the diacid or transesterification for the ester derivative. In step (b), the product of step (a) is subjected to temperatures and pressures in the presence of a suitable catalyst to effect polycondensation. Phosphorus in an amount of 1 to 800 ppm is added in the form of a phosphorus-containing compound during the process.

In a process for producing a polyester containing 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) as one of its glycol components, an aqueous or a methanolic slurry comprising CHDM and a dicarboxylic acid is prepared. The slurry is maintained at a temperature below the melting point of CHDM. The slurry is then fed into a reactor. The slurry is esterified at sufficient temperatures and pressures, and optionally in the presence of a suitable catalyst, to effect esterification. A prepolymer is formed. The prepolymer is then polycondensed at sufficient temperatures and pressures in the presence of a suitable catalyst to effect polycondensation to form a polyester.
