Embodiments disclosed herein relate to carrier allocation and management in multi-carrier communication systems. In some embodiments, the number of carriers assigned to an access terminal on a forward link may be determined by an access network, and the number of carriers assigned to the access terminal on a reverse link may be based on a cooperative process between the access terminal and the access network. In other embodiments, the number of carriers assigned to the access terminal on the reverse link may also be determined by the access network, e.g., in relation to the scheduling information received from the access terminal.

Method and apparatus for carrier allocation and management in multi-carrier communication systems

Some implementations provide a method for prioritizing reverse link packets so that particular reverse link packets are transmitted with a reduced latency in order to improve spectral efficiency of the forward link. The method also optionally includes weighting packets according to their determined lengths, and transmitting packets based on the determined weights. In one implementation, the method includes sorting packets at least according to one of size, type and nature of the data in the packets. Accordingly, sorting of the packets includes at least one of determining the size and the type of each packet. In one implementation, sorting the packets includes deep-packet inspection to determine a respective priority value for each packet.

Reverse link control to reduce forward link latency

Techniques for the reuse of airlink resources in a cellular network are disclosed. A base station controller may gather information about load levels at adjacent sectors of the cellular network. The base station controller may generate and distribute a reuse reference to base stations serving mobile devices in the adjacent sectors. Alternatively, the base station controller may provide the load level information to base stations serving the adjacent sectors and the base stations may determine a sector reuse pattern. The reuse reference or reuse pattern may be adapted to sector load conditions and may designate any combination of carriers, time slots, and power levels for data transmission in a sector. The base stations may schedule data transmission to mobile devices in their respective sectors according to the reuse reference or reuse pattern. The base stations may modify their resource usage in response to changes in sector load.

Adaptive semi-static interference avoidance in cellular networks

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for mobile transmit diversity. In one aspect, a wireless communication apparatus is provided. The wireless communication apparatus includes a plurality of antennas. The wireless communication apparatus further includes a plurality of transmit circuits, each transmit circuit of the plurality of transmit circuits being configured to transmit according to a different radio access technology. The wireless communication apparatus further includes a controller configured to selectively switch each of the transmit circuits of the plurality of transmit circuits to transmit wireless communications via a corresponding one of the plurality of antennas based on priority levels of data for each of the transmit circuits and a detected operating mode of the wireless communication apparatus.

Systems, apparatus, and methods for antenna selection

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for mobile transmit diversity. In one aspect, a wireless communication apparatus is provided. The wireless communication apparatus includes a transmit circuit configured to transmit wireless communications via either a first antenna or a second antenna. The wireless communication apparatus further includes a receive circuit configured to receive wireless communications using either the first antenna or the second antenna. The wireless communication apparatus further includes a controller configured to switch the transmit circuit and the receive circuit from transmitting and receiving wireless communications via the first antenna to transmit and receive wireless communications via the second antenna in response to detecting that a first receive power level of the first antenna is less than a second receive power level of the second antenna and a difference between the second receive power level and the first receive power level is greater than a threshold.

Distributed antenna systems (DASs) can include a plurality of spatially separated remote antenna units. According to at least one example, a first group of remote antenna units can simulcast downlink transmissions on a first carrier with a particular sector identity (ID). A second group of remote antenna units, including at least one different remote antenna unit from the first group, can simulcast downlink transmissions on a second carrier with the same sector ID. According to at least one other example, two or more remote antenna units which include respective coverage areas that are non-adjacent to one another can be employed to simulcast downlink transmissions.

Distributed antenna systems and methods of wireless communications for facilitating simulcasting and de-simulcasting of downlink transmissions

Methods, systems, and devices are described for communicating physical layer wireless parameters over an application programming interface. A wireless modem of a wireless device may measure at least one physical layer wireless parameter. The wireless modem may report the at least one physical layer wireless parameter to an application running on the wireless device over an application programming interface between the wireless modem and the application. A behavior of the application may be adapted to control wireless communications between the application and a network based on the at least one physical layer wireless parameter reported by the wireless modem. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also claimed and described.

Communicating physical layer wireless parameters over an application programming interface

In a wireless communication system where different frequency bands are deployed to generate various communication zones, pilot signal set management for a plurality of pilot signals generated from an additional coverage zone is based on identifying a preselected signal set from the plurality of pilot signals and determining whether a predetermined criterion is met.

Pilot signal set management in a multi-carrier communication system

A wireless communications power saving method and apparatus is provided. The method includes, when no reverse link traffic exists and no forward link traffic has been received for a predetermined amount of time, establishing, at a terminal, a reverse link transmission pilot signal duty cycle, and boosting overhead channel signal transmission power during ON slots and gating overhead channel and pilot signal transmission power during OFF slots. The design further includes estimating, at the terminal, an available data transmission rate, determining an actual data transmission rate, setting a terminal transmission duty cycle for a next period based on the estimated available data transmission rate, the actual data transmission rate, and a margin of error, and transmitting data from the terminal according to the terminal transmission duty cycle.

Wireless communication device power reduction method and apparatus

Access terminals are adapted to facilitate discontinuous transmission (DTX). According to one example, an access terminal can employ a short timescale DTX mode and a long timescale DTX mode independent of one another. The access terminal can determine whether a first set of predetermined factors are present. When the first set of factors are determined to be present, the access terminal may enable a short timescale DTX mode, independent of whether a long timescale DTX mode is enabled or not. A determination may also be made whether a second set of predetermined factors are present. When the second set of predetermined factors are determined to be present, the access terminal may enable a long timescale DTX mode, independent of whether the short timescale DTX mode is enabled or not. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also included.

Devices and methods for facilitating discontinuous transmission on access terminals

A method of communicating in a wireless network including receiving effective load values for sectors accessible to an access terminal of the wireless network. The effective load values represent effective loads on the sectors. The method also includes receiving pilot signal channel quality values of the sectors and selecting a serving sector, for the access terminal based on the effective load values and the pilot signal channel quality values.

Load balancing

In a wireless communications system, a serving base station performs outer and closed power control for an overhead channel and a traffic channel for data, either of which can carry an acknowledgement (Ack) channel and Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) channel on an uplink from User Equipment (UE). In an exemplary aspect, data packet communication is implemented in 3GPP LTE Rel. 8 wherein the uplink has a Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiplex (SC-FDM) uplink waveform. The UE performs open loop power control by a determining transmit power spectral density value by using received energy per symbol for a reference signal.

Power control in a wireless communication system

A method of regulating data flow in a wireless communication network includes: collecting data regarding dynamic loading of sector-carrier pairs (pilots) in communication sectors of the wireless communication network; obtaining data rates for data flows of the pilots to access terminals within the wireless communication network; determining one or more pilots to use for conveying data in the wireless communication network based on the data rates and the dynamic loading; and altering data flow over the pilots by at least one of changing a data rate over at least one of the pilots or changing a combination of pilots used by the wireless communication network for conveying data to increase total data flow.

Wireless network resource adaptation

The disclosure relates to managing applications configured for execution on a mobile device. An embodiment of the disclosure receives one or more network access requests from one or more applications executing on the mobile device, determines that the mobile device is operating in a background mode, suppresses transmission to a network of the one or more network access requests to a network based on the determination, and transmits a subset of the one or more network access requests upon transition out of the background mode.
