An open loop power control method for setting a transmit power of mobile station () during a handoff from a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service to a circuit switched service sets a transmit power of the mobile station based upon a power level associated with the VoIP call. A disclosed example includes using an average power level of a reverse pilot channel of the VoIP call and correction factors based upon forward link and reverse link parameters during the VoIP call.

Power control for handoffs between voice over internet protocol and circuit switched calls

A wireless communication network () includes a power control technique that includes repeating an erasure indicator bit in a transmission from a mobile station () to a base station (). The repeated erasure indicator bit is transmitted on the uplink to each base station. The base station then uses the majority rule of those repeated erasure indicator bits to adjust its transmit power. It results in a desired power control command corresponding to the quality of a downlink between a base station () and the mobile station (). A disclosed example includes using the repeated error indicator bit for deciding whether a recent frame should be considered an erasure. If so, the base station increases power on the downlink forward channel. If not, the base station decreases the transmit power on the downlink forward channel. A disclosed example includes alternative power control adjustment techniques, depending on the recent history of the quality of the downlink.

Using the repetition of an erasure indicator bit to enhance a power control command during handoff

Data communication includes an estimate of packet error rate that is useful, for example, when there is insufficient data transmission to provide a direct measurement of packet error rate. At least one pilot channel output provides a basis to determine an estimated packet error rate. One example includes using a pilot channel ratio of an energy-per-chip to a noise spectrum density. Another example includes using a pilot symbol error rate from the pilot channel as the basis for determining the traffic channel packet error rate.

Packet error rate estimation in a communication system

The present invention provides a method for detecting a reverse rate indicator channel. The method may include accessing first encoded information indicative of a data rate and a first sub-packet identifier associated with a sub-packet, accessing second encoded information indicative of the data rate and a second sub-packet identifier associated with the sub-packet, and modifying the second encoded information. The method may also include combining the first encoded information and the modified second encoded information, and decoding the combined first and modified second encoded information.

Detecting a reverse rate indicator channel

Outer loop power control for a traffic channel includes using at least one output from another channel to determine an appropriate control threshold such as a signal-to-noise ratio when selected channel conditions exist. One example traffic channel condition comprises having insufficient data transmission to provide a direct measurement of packet error rate. Another example traffic channel condition used to determine when to use the other channel output is a transmission mode on the traffic channel. An example output used for setting the control threshold is a chip energy to noise ratio of a pilot channel associated with the traffic channel.

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling transmission power of a wireless unit. The method includes providing a power control in a reverse link to a network that transmits data on a traffic channel in a bursty manner based on a performance metric of a channel with continuous transmission of other data than on the traffic channel. To provide a power control in a reverse link of a spread-spectrum wireless data network a method and an apparatus are provided for combining performance of a quality of service from at least one of a first quality feedback channel and a second quality feedback channel with that of a pilot channel and providing an outer-loop power control in said reverse link for a wireless communication on a traffic channel based on said combined performance of the quality of service to control transmission power of a wireless unit. A quality of service metric may be associated with one or more channels of the reverse link to determine performance of such a channel when transmission of data on a traffic channel is bursty in nature. Using a performance metric, such as a quality of service metric of a pilot channel, a power control in the reverse link may be provided when data is not transmitted on the traffic channel, e.g., in a bursty traffic channel to control transmission power of a wireless unit. In this manner, the transmission power of the wireless unit may be controlled based on an outer-loop power control that provides a continuous control for a non-continuous transmission.
