Embodiments disclosed herein relate to reducing power consumption of an electronic device scanning for wireless communication signals while maintaining or even improving an efficiency of the scanning operations. To do so, the electronic device may include more than one scan core, such as a main core and a receiving core. The receiving core may have limited functionality compared to the main core. For example, the receiving core may only receive wireless signals (including scanning for wireless signals). That is, the receiving core may not support certain operations that consume relative high power that are supported by the main core, such as transmission of signals. In this way, operation of the receiving core, either in place of or in addition to the main core, may reduce power consumption of the electronic device by avoiding high power consuming operations, such as data transmission, while scanning for various signals.

Methods for assigning effective isotopic radiated power to an access point in a wireless network are provided. In one aspect, a method includes determining weights for neighboring access points in a wireless network based on channel frequency and basic service set color assignments. For a particular access point, a first path loss based on the determined weights and a second path loss based on the neighboring access points are calculated. First and second effective isotopic radiated power values are calculated based on the respective first and second path losses. The effective isotopic radiated power of the particular access point is adjusted based on the lower of the first and second calculated effective isotopic radiated power values. Systems and machine-readable media are also provided.

A network controller may include a memory and a processor. The memory may include instructions executable by the processor to receive a message from an access point. The message may comprise an interference event detected on a particular channel, wherein the particular channel is part of a particular channel list associated with the access point and stored at the network controller in a wireless local area network (WLAN). The memory may further include instructions executable to remove the particular channel from the particular channel list associated with the access point. The memory may further include instructions executable to determine a channel plan for a plurality of access points in the WLAN based on a corresponding plurality of channel lists including the particular channel list and deploy the channel plan to the plurality of access points.

Systems and methods for grouping client devices for uplink multi-user transmission are provided. Client device groups may be determined based on at least one of traffic compatibility/similarity, client device class compatibility/similarity, and uplink pathloss similarity. A target received signal strength measured by an AP with which client devices in the client device groups communicate and an appropriate modulation coding scheme rate to be used by the client devices may be determined and set for the client devices. The modulation coding scheme rate can be adjusted based on feedback regarding successful data packet reception at the AP from each of the client devices.

An example non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions executable by a processor to: determine a channel distribution vector based on a channel priority for a plurality of available wireless channels within a wireless network; receive a set of constraints on a channel plan; determine a channel plan meeting the set of user defined constraints based on the channel distribution vector; and transmit the channel plan to a plurality of radios on the wireless network, wherein the channel plan comprises a channel assigned to each radio of the plurality of radios.

Systems and methods for spatial reuse in a deployed wireless area network (WLAN) include identifying a plurality of competing APs of an external wireless network operating on a same channel as a deployed AP of a deployed wireless network; examining the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of the identified plurality of competing APs of the external wireless network; filtering out selected one or more of the identified plurality of competing APs of the external wireless network based on their respective RSSIs to arrive at a filtered set of competing APs; and augmenting a spatial reuse group (SRG) of the deployed AP to include the APs in the filtered set of competing APs in the SRG.

Systems and methods for calculating uplink pathloss in a wireless local area network are provided. Uplink pathloss between an access point and client device operating in the wireless local area network can be calculated based on determining an effective maximum transmit power. Based on the effective maximum transmit power, and known uplink power headroom, a current transmit power of the client device can be determined. Based on the current transmit power of the client device, uplink pathloss can be determined. If the operating conditions and/or characteristics of the client device and/or wireless local area network change, the uplink pathloss may be re-evaluated.

Examples disclosed herein relate, among other things, to a controller communicatively coupled to a plurality of radios, where each radio may be associated with a wireless channel. The controller may obtain, for each radio in the plurality of radios, a set of parameters associated with the radio's communication through the wireless channel associated with the radio, and determine an air-time capacity of the radio based on the set of parameters. The controller may also calculate a combined air-time capacity of the plurality of radios based on the air-time capacity of each of the plurality of radios, and based on the combined air-time capacity, determine whether to assign a different wireless channel to at least one of the plurality of radios.

Systems and methods for assigning BSS colors in a deployed wireless area network (WLAN) include identifying a plurality of APs of an external wireless network operating on a same channel as a deployed AP of a deployed wireless network; selecting as a subset of the plurality of APs of the external wireless network those APs of the external wireless network based on expected interference; grouping the APs of the subset of the plurality of APs by a basic service set (BSS) color used by each of the plurality of identified APs of the external wireless network to form AP BSS color groups; calculating an airtime utilization for each AP color group; and selecting a BSS color using the calculated airtime utilization and assigning the selected BSS color for use by the deployed AP of the deployed wireless network.

Systems and methods for assigning default an alternative BSS colors in a wireless local area network (WLAN) including a network graph representing radio neighbors include assigning a frequency range and EIRP for each radio represented in the network graph; generating a subgraph of radios operating at the same frequency range; for the subgraph, determining a minimum number of basic service set (BSS) colors required to BSS color the subgraph without BSS color conflict; based on the minimum number of BSS colors, assigning a default BSS color to each radio in the subgraph to avoid BSS color conflict among radios in the subgraph; based on remaining BSS colors, assigning one or more alternative BSS colors to each radio in the subgraph.

An example access point comprising: a memory; and a processor executing instructions stored in the memory to: determine a first interference event while operating on a first channel, wherein the first channel is designated to the access point in a global channel plan by a network controller based on a global view of a wireless network; switch to operate on a second channel from the first channel for a first amount of time in response to the first interference event; determine a second interference event of the same event type as the first interference event on the first channel, wherein the second interference event is the same event type as the first interference event; and switch to operate on the second channel from the first channel for a longer amount of time than the first amount of time, wherein the second channel is selected based on a local view of the wireless network by the access point.

Examples of the present disclosure include: obtain data collected from a plurality of access points (APs) in a WLAN, including a current allocation of channels to radios of the APs according to a current channel plan; calculate a new channel plan which assigns a different channel to at least one of the radios; calculate a first metric that predicts better network performance achieved by the new channel plan than the current allocation of channels to the radios; determine whether the first metric exceeds a first predetermined threshold; and implement the new channel plan in response to determining that the first metric exceeds the first predetermined threshold.
