A display device includes a pixel unit including scan lines, data lines crossing the scan lines, and pixels connected to the scan lines and the data lines; a timing control unit configured to receive first data from an outside; a conversion unit configured to receive the first data from the timing control unit, to extract luminance components of the first data corresponding to the pixels to determine luminance distribution of the first data, to divide the luminance distribution into a plurality of luminance distribution ranges, and to convert the first data into second data by regulating an input gray level of the first data based on a conversion equation corresponding to a variation between data of the luminance distribution ranges; and a data drive unit configured to receive the second data from the conversion unit and to provide the second data to the data lines.

A data conversion unit includes a gamma conversion unit configured to generate a first gamma data by gamma-converting a first data supplied from an outside thereof, a representative luminance value calculation unit configured to calculate a representative luminance value of an entire panel, based on the first gamma data, a subtraction unit configured to subtract the calculated representative luminance value from gamma conversion values of respective pixels included in the first gamma data, a compensation unit configured to generate a second gamma data by converting the gamma conversion values of the respective pixels, based on the subtracted values corresponding to the respective pixels, and an inverse gamma conversion unit configured to generate a second data by inverse-gamma-converting the second gamma data.

A color gamut conversion device includes: a target color coordinate converter configured to convert each RGB value of red (R), green (G), blue (B), cyan (C), magenta (M), yellow (Y), and white (W) of a target color coordinate into a tristimulus value XYZ; a reference conversion matrix generator configured to generate a first reference conversion matrix for converting each tristimulus value XYZ into an R'G&#x2032;B&#x2032; value according to a color gamut of a reference display; a low power corrected value calculator configured to calculate a low power corrected value for correcting the R&#x2032;G&#x2032;B&#x2032; value; a lookup table (LUT) generator configured to generate an LUT including an R&#x2033;G&#x2033;B&#x2033; value corresponding to each RGB value by using a second reference conversion matrix that the low power corrected value is applied to the first reference conversion matrix; and a color gamut converter configured to convert image data of the RGB values into image data of the R&#x2033;G&#x2033;B&#x2033; values using the LUT.

An apparatus and method for compensating color characteristics in individual display devices that each include a display unit including a plurality of pixels to display images according to compensated image data signals, a test data input section to transmit a predetermined test image data signal to the pixels to display a test image, a luminance measuring unit to receive luminance information from the display unit displaying the test image and determine actual luminance ratios of a first color, a second color, and a third color from the received luminance information, a compensation ratio determiner to calculate a compensation ratio from both the actual and reference luminance ratios of each color and a data compensator to generate the compensated image data signals by adjusting external input video signals according to the compensation ratio.
