A strip of tire ply stock is reinforced with steel cords wherein the steel cords are constructed of high strength wire filament having at least a tensile strength of &minus;2000&times;D&plus;4400 MPa where D is the filament diameter in mm. Tires are constructed with the ply stock in the belt and/or carcass.

High strength cord

This invention reveals steel alloys for use in manufacturing reinforcing wires for rubber products, such as tires. The steel filaments made with such steel alloys have an outstanding combination of strength and ductility. The steel alloys of this invention can be manufactured into filaments having a tensile strength in the range of 4000 MPa to 5000 MPa. Additionally, these can be patented in a low-cost process due to their having a very fast rate of isothermal transformation. This allows the steel in the steel wire being patented to transform from a face-centered cubic microstructure to an essentially body-centered cubic microstructure within a very short period. This invention more specifically discloses a steel alloy composition which is particularly suitable for use in manufacturing reinforcing wire for rubber products which consists essentially of (a) iron, (b) about 1.05 to about 1.7 weight percent carbon, (c) about 0.2 to about 0.8 weight percent manganese, (d) about 0.1 to about 0.8 weight percent silicon, (e) about 0.1 to about 0.7 weight percent chromium, (f) 0.0 to about 0.5 weight percent nickel, (g) 0.0 to about 0.3 weight percent copper, (h) 0.0 to about 0.5 weight percent molybdenum and (i) 0.0 to about 0.5 weight percent vanadium; with the proviso that the carbon equivalent of the steel alloy is within the range of 1.15 to 1.8 weight percent. It is highly preferred for the steel alloys of this invention to contain from about 0.02 to about 0.3 weight percent copper.

Steel tire cord with high tensile strength

A pneumatic radial tire includes at least two belt plies reinforced with steel monofilaments inclined at an angle of 10.degree. to 30.degree. with respect to the equatorial plane of the tire, the monofilaments being laid at an end count ranging from 25 to 60 ends per inch and having a diameter of from 0.25 to 0.40 mm, a tensile strength of at least 4080 MPa-(2000.times.D).times.95 percent where D is the filament diameter in millimeters and a fatigue resistance of at least 3500 cycles as measured by the three-roll bending fatigue test. Preferably, the filament diameter ranges from 0.30 to 0.35 mm, the tensile strength of each monofilament is at least 4400 MPa-(2000.times.D).times.95 percent and the fatigue resistance ranges from 3500 to 6000 cycles.

High strength alloy steels for tire reinforcement

A method and apparatus for drawing steel wire to produce high tensile strength, steel wire with increased torsional ductility. The wire is drawn through a plurality of standard dies (14) in a wire drawing machine (10). The cross section of the wire is reduced by a constant reduction of about 15% to about 18% at each of the standard dies (14) with the exception of the final two dies (18, 19). The wire is then reduced by about 10% to about 90% of the typical reduction at the next to last die (18) and the remainder of the reduction at the final die (19).

Process for manufacturing steel filament

This invention reveals a steel wire element useful in the reinforcement of rubber articles in which the steel wire is provided with an adhesive coating comprising a ternary brass alloy containing about 55 percent to about 75 percent by weight copper, about 15 to about 45 percent by weight zinc, and about 0.1 to about 10 percent by weight iron. Preferably this ternary brass alloy will contain about 1 to 5 percent by weight iron. The ternary alloy may be formed by sequentially electroplating layers of copper, iron and zinc followed by heating to promote the diffusion of the copper, iron and zinc layers. The steel wire elements of this invention are useful in the reinforcement of vehicle tires, power transmission belts, conveyor belts, hoses, and the like.
