A receiver and a detecting method thereof are provided. The receiver includes a plurality of antennas receiving a transmitted signal through multiple paths; and an equalizer collecting a plurality of sample signals by reflecting signals received in other antennas in the signals received in the plurality of antennas, and detecting a symbol of the transmitted signal by combining the plurality of sample signals that are collected with each other.

A carrier recovery apparatus usable with a VSB receiver and a method thereof. The carrier recovery apparatus is capable of recovering a carrier even though a pilot signal may be corrupted due to multi-path characteristics of a channel. Accordingly, the carrier recovery apparatus performs a BECM (Band Edge Component Maximization) algorithm on upper and lower sidebands of a received signal to generate phase information therefrom. The phase information is combined in a combiner. Since the BECM algorithm is performed on the upper and lower sidebands, it is possible to execute the carrier recovery even through the upper sideband of a received signal may be corrupted. Therefore, the carrier recovery apparatus can prevent performance degradation of the VSB receiver caused by corruption in the pilot signal.

In an example, the scaler may include an offset calculator receiving a data signal including a first signal (e.g., a chrominance signal) and a second signal (e.g., a luminance signal) and determining an initial offset relationship between the first signal and the second signal. A digital broadcasting transmission/reception system having an improved receiving performance and a signal processing method thereof. The transmission system includes a FEC encoder encoding an incoming signal according to a certain FEC scheme, a sync insertion unit inserting a sync into the encoded signal, a hidden pilot insertion unit inserting a hidden pilot into the sync-inserted signal, a pilot insertion unit inserting a pilot tone into the hidden-pilot-inserted signal, a pulse shaping filter pulse-shaping the pilot-tone-inserted signal with a certain roll-off factor, and a RF unit transmitting the pulse-shaped signal through a transmission channel band. Performances of equalization and synchronization acquirement can be enhanced in multipath conditions by utilizing the transmission system containing the hidden pilot.

Digital broadcasting transmission/reception capable of improving a receiving performance and a signal processing method thereof

A carrier and symbol timing recovery apparatus usable in a VSB (Vestigial Side Band) receiver, and a method thereof. For a carrier and symbol timing recovery, error information is detected using a pilot signal, an upper sideband and a lower sideband of a received signal. Each of the detected error information is multiplied by a predetermined weight, respectively, and the results of the respective multiplications are added/combined. Therefore, even though the pilot signal may be corrupted, the carrier recovery can nevertheless be accurately performed. Additionally, even though the upper sideband of a received VSB-modulated signal may be corrupted, the lower sideband can be utilized to perform the symbol timing recovery. As a result, performance of a receiving system can be improved even under unfavorable channel characteristics. Moreover, since the carrier recovery and the symbol timing recovery are executed through a single apparatus, it becomes possible to simplify a hardware implementation thereof.

Carrier and symbol timing recovery apparatus usable with a vestigial side band receiver and recovery method thereof

A symbol timing recovery apparatus used with a VSB-type receiver and a method of the same. In order for the symbol timing recovery, error information is generated and used utilizing a band edge component maximization (BECM) of a frequency band as well as an upper frequency band. Therefore, the symbol timing recovery can be more effectively achieved even when the upper frequency band is damaged due to multi-path components. Also, efficiency of the overall timing recovery can be improved by using the lower frequency band as well as the upper frequency band of the received signal in performing the symbol timing recovery. As a result, deterioration of the receiving system including the symbol timing recovery apparatus can be prevented.

Symbol timing recovery apparatus used with a VSB-type receiver and a method of using the same

A digital broadcast transmission system and a signal processing method thereof offers improved receptability. The digital broadcast transmission system includes an error correction encoding unit for encoding an input signal according to a predetermined error correction method; a synchronous signal inserting unit for inserting a synchronous signal in the input signal after the error correction encoding; a first pilot inserting unit for inserting a first pilot signal in the input signal which contains the synchronous signal therein; a second pilot inserting unit for inserting a plurality of second pilot signals in the input signal which contains the first pilot signal therein; a pulse shaping filter for pulse shaping the input signal with the first and the second pilot signals according to a predetermined roll-off factor; and a radio frequency (RF) unit for transmitting the pulse-shaped input signal to a transmission channel band. By inserting a plurality of pilot signals in the transmitted data, problems associated with disappearance of only pilot signal due to poor channel environment can be overcome.
