An optical waveguide includes a linear metallic thin film having a light delivering unit coupled to one end thereof, through which light is incident; and at least more than two dielectric layers surrounding the metallic thin film. In the optical waveguide, an effective refractive index and a propagation loss in the metallic thin film is reduced so that long-range light transmission is realized. Further, a loss of light caused by the coupling to optical fiber, which is coupled to one end of the metallic thin film, is simultaneously reduced.

An optical data storage system writes or reads information with respect to an optical storage medium using an optical pickup including a solid immersion optical system or a solid immersion lens for generating a near-field and emitting a light beam. The optical storage medium includes a recording layer which is formed on a surface of an optical transmissive layer opposite to another surface of the optical transmissive layer which opposes the solid immersion optical system or solid immersion lens. The thickness of the optical transmissive layer is larger than one wavelength of the light beam. The interval between the surfaces of the solid immersion lens or solid immersion optical system and the optical transmissive layer is smaller than one wavelength of the light beam. Thus, the light beam reflected from the inside of an air gap and the inside of the optical storage medium between the air gap and the recording layer does not function as noise with respect to the light reflected from the recording layer. Also, since the thickness of a protective layer or a substrate which is an external surface of the optical storage medium can be thickened, information can be written or read with respect to the optical storage medium even when the optical storage medium has dust and/or damage.

The present invention relates to an optical recording apparatus, which converts a one-dimensional signal beam into a two-dimensional signal beam using a scanning mirror at the time of recording data on a holographic recording medium, etc., thus greatly reducing required manufacturing processes when manufacturing a spatial light modulator. The optical recording apparatus includes a light generation and radiation means for generating beams, and dispersing and radiating the beams in two directions. A reference beam radiation means converts radiation angles of reference beams and radiates the reference beams having different angles onto a recording medium. An adaptor includes a sensor hole to be open/closed, and a method and an apparatus drive the adaptor. The adaptor includes at least one sensor hole determining the size of a disc received in an adaptor body which is received via a disc holder. The disc holder includes an elastic press extended therefrom and elastically support the disc, preventing a movement of the disc until the disc holder is inserted into the adaptor body. Further, a release is disposed on the adaptor body to release the disc from the elastic press when the disc holder is inserted into the adaptor body. A method for driving the adaptor includes determining whether the sensor hole is open; and determining the type of device inserted into a disc drive. The type of drive inserted into the disc drive is determined by the adaptor accommodating an 8-cm disc when the sensor hole is open, while a cartridge accommodates a 12-cm disc when the sensor hole is closed. An apparatus for driving the adaptor includes a sensing switch to be selectively inserted into the sensor hole of the inserted adaptor to be turned on/off and transmit the corresponding signal regarding the open/closed state of the sensor hole to a microcomputer.
