A side light-emitting device including a light-emitting device to generate light and a side emitter to emit the light incident from the light-emitting device in a lateral direction. The side emitter includes a first reflecting surface to reflect the light emitted from the light-emitting device into the side emitter, a second reflecting surface that is formed at a portion of the side emitter that contacts the light-emitting device to reflect a first light that is reflected from the first reflecting surface in the lateral direction, and a refracting surface to refract a second light that is reflected from the first reflecting surface and proceeding directly toward the refracting surface and the first light that is reflected from the first reflecting surface to the second reflecting surface and is reflected again from the second reflecting surface to exit the side emitter in the lateral direction.

Side light-emitting device, backlight unit having the side light-emitting device, and liquid crystal display apparatus employing the backlight unit

A projection display includes three illumination units to emit red, green, and blue beams, at least one optical modulator to modulate the red, green, and blue beams to be suitable for image data, and projection optics to magnify and project the light beams emitted from the at least one optical modulator. Each of the illumination units includes: a collimator including a parabolic first reflective surface; a compact light source located at a focal point of the first reflective surface; a polarizer that transforms a light beam emitted from the collimator into a P- or S-polarized beam; and an integrator that transforms the light beam emitted from the polarizer to be emitted at a uniform intensity of light.

Integrator module with a collimator and a compact light source and projection display having the same

A side light-emitting device, a backlight unit using the side light-emitting device as a light source, and a liquid crystal display (LCD) apparatus employing the backlight unit. The side light-emitting device includes a light-emitting device to generate light and a side emitter disposed adjacent to the light-emitting device to emit the light incident from the light-emitting device in a lateral direction. The side emitter includes a reflecting surface to reflect incident light, and a reflecting/refracting surface to totally internally reflect light incident directly from the light-emitting device to the reflecting surface and to refract the light incident from the reflecting surface so that the refracted light propagates in the lateral direction. Since the side light-emitting device emits most the light in the lateral direction, using the side light-emitting device as a light source in a backlight unit allows light to be mixed evenly.

A color filter unit and a projection system employing the same. The color filter unit includes a first color selection polarization conversion element, which converts a polarization direction of a beam in a specific color band of an incident light, and a color filter, which separates light passed through the first color selection polarization conversion element according to color, so that color mixture in spectral boundaries between color beams is prevented. Because the color mixture occurring when beams into which light emitted from a white light source is separated are combined is prevented, the quality of an image is improved.

Color filter unit and projection system employing the same

A linear side emitter, a backlight system and a liquid crystal display using the same are provided. The linear side emitter includes a plurality of LED chips, a bottom portion, a reflecting surface, and side surfaces. The LED chips arranged in a line on the bottom portion. The reflecting surface is disposed above the bottom portion and reflects light exiting the LED chips. The side surfaces are formed at both sides of the LED chip array line and transmit light is reflected by the reflecting surface and light reflected by the reflecting surface and then reflected by the bottom portion. The side surfaces each have at least one bend formed therein.

Linear side emitter, backlight system and liquid crystal display using the same

A side emitting device, a backlight unit using the same as a light source, and a liquid crystal display (LCD) employing the backlight unit. The side emitting device includes a light-emitting device to emit light, and a side emitter to change the path of at least part of the light emitted from the light-emitting device. The side emitter includes a first reflecting surface reflecting light emitted from the light-emitting device in a first range of angles close to a central axis, a first refracting surface refracting the light reflected by the first reflecting surface obliquely downward from the horizontal axis, and a second refracting surface refracting light emitted from the light-emitting device in a second range of angles complementary to the first range of angles. The backlight unit includes at least an array of side emitting devices, a reflection diffusion plate and a first transmission diffusion plate.

A compact light source module includes a compact light source and a collimator that includes a parabolic first reflective surface to reduce a radiation angle at which a light beam radiates from the compact light source, so as to emit the light beam through a side aperture and a plane second reflective surface which is located under the first reflective surface and comprises an incident portion through which the light beam radiates from the compact light source. The compact light source is located in the vicinity of a focal point of the first reflective surface.

Compact LED module and projection display adopting the same

A projection display includes three integrator modules which emit red, green, and blue beams, respectively. The integrator modules include at least one compact light source and a glass rod that transforms a light beam emitted from the at least one compact light source so as to have a uniform light intensity and emits a modulated light beam. The glass rod includes an incident portion through which the light beam radiates, and an emission portion through which the light beam is emitted. The incident portion includes a parabolic first reflective surface to collimate the light beam radiating from the at least one compact light source, and the at least one compact light source is located in the vicinity of a focal point of the first reflective surface.

Integrator module with a compact light source and projection display having the same

A lens unit, for a projector, includes a scrambler which converts light input from a lamp into a uniform light. An image lens unit is arranged on an optical path between the scrambler and a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel for generating an image. The image lens unit allows the light passing through the scrambler to be emitted to the entire surface of the LCD panel. A collimating lens is arranged on the optical path between the image lens and the LCD panel and is provided for converting the light passing through the image lens into a parallel beam. The image lens unit consists of a first image lens of a positive power and a second image lens of a positive power.

A rear projector employing an image display uses a polymer dispersion liquid crystal (PDLC) panel which suppresses a turbulent reflection due to a high light refractive index. Accordingly, a slim appearance is attained since a light separating/synthesizing system is eliminated, and the resolution and brightness of the image is improved by precisely and easily controlling the change of the light pathway.

A wide-projection angle liquid crystal projection lens system including a condensing lens, installed opposite to a light-emitting surface of an image-forming element for emitting image rays to be magnified and projected onto a screen of a projection display system, for converging the image rays incident thereto, a first lens group, installed opposite to a light-emitting surface of the condensing lens, for compensating for chromatic aberration of the image rays converged and emitted from the condensing lens, a second lens group for changing a direction of the image rays emitted from the first lens group, and a third lens group for magnifying the image rays emitted from the second lens group and projecting the magnified image rays to a reflecting mirror. According to the system, the optical axis of the system can be changed over about 90.degree. utilizing the prism provided in the projection lenses, and thus the height and depth of the projection display system is reduced to a minimum. Also, utilizing the condensing lens provided opposite to the light-emitting surface of the image-forming element, only the image rays emitted from the liquid crystal display panel at nearly light angles pass through the projection lens system, and thereby the contrast of the image is improved.

Wide-projection angle liquid crystal projection lens system

A light source apparatus for generating parallel light is equipped with dual mirrors to compensate for a shadow cast by the lamp itself. The apparatus includes an elliptical reflector and a light source located at the near focal point of the elliptical reflector. A first mirror having an aperture in the center thereof, for reflecting rays emitted directly from the light source back toward the light source, and a second mirror positioned directly in front of the light source, for reflecting the rays reflected from the first mirror and passing the rays through the aperture of the first mirror are provided. A collimating lens is provided for forming parallel light by focusing the rays passed through the aperture of the first mirror, thereby being used as the light source or other element of an optical instrument which requires a highly uniform parallel light source.

Light source apparatus for generating parallel light having dual-mirrors

A parallel light generating apparatus uses two arrayed mirrors. The apparatus includes a parabolic mirror, a lamp located at the focal point of the parabolic mirror, and first and second arrayed mirrors disposed in parallel, each of which is divided into plural portions, with each portion being divided again into parts. A panel is situated between the arrayed mirrors and has a plurality of holes corresponding to each portion of both mirrors, for blocking non-parallel light.

Apparatus for generating parallel light using two arrayed mirrors

A metal halide lamp includes a luminous tube which is sealed and filled with predetermined rare gases and metal halide, a pair of electrodes provided in the inner portion near both ends of the luminous tube, an outer tube which encloses the luminous tube, and a pair of socket connectors electrically connected with the electrodes, wherein the luminous tube cross-section forms an uneven pattern and is pleated along outer and inner surfaces of the luminous tube. The atmospheric pressure in the luminous tube is stabilized to prevent the bending of the arc. Accordingly, the lifetime of the luminous tube is prolonged and high vapor density is obtained, thereby improving luminous efficiency and color rendering by far.

A projection lens system for use in a rear type projection television. The system includes a first lens of which at least one surface is aspherical, the center portion of which has little optical power, and the peripheral portion of which has a weak positive optical power. A second lens of the system has a strong positive optical power and a bi-convex shape, wherein at least one of its surfaces is aspherical. A third lens in the system has a strong negative optical power and a bi-concave shape, and has at least one surface that is aspherical. A fourth lens has a strong positive optical power and a bi-convex shape, and at least one aspherical surface. A fifth lens has a weak negative optical power and a meniscus shape, wherein at least one surface is aspherical. The projection lens system reduces the number of lenses required, as compared with the prior art, provides a brighter picture and a greater field angle, and facilitates the correction of chromatic aberrations.
