A communication system comprising a transmitter that is adapted to transmit a data signal that is broken into a plurality of time slots. The transmitter inserts communication data into a subset of the plurality of time slots and to create null data representative of information about the communication system. The null data is inserted into a subset of the plurality of time slots not occupied by communication data. A communication system comprising a receiver that receives a data signal that is broken into a plurality of time slots. The receiver identifies correlation peaks in the data signal that correspond to a subset of the plurality of time slots, the subset of the plurality of time slots including null data representative of information about the communication system. The receiver may associate logical values with the correlation peaks and decode the logical values to obtain the information about the communication system.

Method and system for coded null packet-aided synchronization

The disclosed embodiments relate to a system for generating forward error correction (FEC) packets. The system includes a first FEC encoder that receives data and encodes first FEC data with the data to form FEC encoded data. Also included in the system is a second FEC encoder that encodes the FEC encoded data to produce second FEC data. An FEC packet formatter formats the second FEC data into an FEC packet.

Method and apparatus for providing forward error correction

There is provided a correlation method for spread spectrum signals. Correlation peaks in packet headers included in the spread spectrum signals are detected by averaging known signals that repeat in the packet headers. Data corresponding to the spread spectrum signals is recovered based on the correlation peaks.

Correlation detection improvement by averaging spread spectrum signals

An adaptive channel equalizer ( ) for processing a demodulated VSB signal containing terrestrial broadcast high definition television information includes an adaptive feed forward filter (FFF ) and an adaptive decision feedback filter (DFF ). The equalizer FFF and DFF elements operate adaptively in blind, training, and decision-directed modes. A direct connection provided from the equalizer output to the DFF facilitates coarse signal acquisition and equalization during the blind operating mode.

Carrier tracking loop for direct sequence spread spectrum systems

A receiver of a handset transceiver, in a wireless telephone system having a plurality of wireless handset and a base unit having a base transceiver. Each handset has a handset transceiver for establishing a time-division multiple access (TDMA) link over a shared channel with the base unit via the base transceiver, in which each handset communicates during an exclusive time slot of a TDMA scheme that allocates time slots to handsets during an exclusive time slot of a TDMA scheme that allocates time slots to active handsets for receiving a spread spectrum signal comprising successive chips representing successive symbols. Each receiver has one or more demodulation loops for demodulating the received spread spectrum signal, wherein each demodulation loop is characterized by one or more demodulation loop parameters. A parallel correlator of the receiver detects a peak bin and provides the peak bin and two adjacent bins. An error estimator of the receiver adjusts the demodulation parameters in accordance with the peak bin and the two adjacent bins to optimize demodulation of the spread spectrum signal.

A wireless telephone system having a plurality of wireless handsets and a base unit, the base unit having a base transceiver. The handset transceiver has a receiver and a transmitter, and a local clock signal generator that provides clock signals at a local clock frequency. The receiver receives samples representing the first signal, and generates symbol error measurements used to cause a receiver interpolator to produce, in response to the received samples, samples taken at times synchronized to the successive symbols of the first signal. The handset transmitter transmits to the base transceiver a second signal representing successive symbols at a second symbol rate b y modifying the second symbol rate in accordance with the symbol error measurements so that the second symbol rate is substantially identical to the first symbol rate.

A wireless telephone system having a plurality of wireless handsets and a base unit, the base unit having a base transceiver. Each handset has a handset transceiver for establishing a wireless link over a shared channel with the base unit via the base transceiver, wherein the base transceiver transmits to a given handset transceiver a forward signal at a carrier frequency. Each handset transceiver has a receiver having a carrier tracking loop for detecting and removing a carrier offset from the forward signal; a transmitter for transmitting to the base transceiver a return signal; and an oscillator, independent of a base oscillator of the base transceiver on which the carrier frequency is based, for driving the receiver and transmitter of the handset. The handset transmitter comprises a prerotator that prerotates the return signal in accordance with the carrier offset detected by the carrier tracking loop so that the return signal will be received by the base transceiver with substantially no carrier offset.

Providing initial power estimate to wireless telephone handsets

A wireless telephone system and related method are described, the system having a plurality of wireless handsets and a base unit, the base unit having a base transceiver, each handset having a handset transceiver for establishing a wireless link over a shared channel with the base unit via the base transceiver. The base unit transmits a signal comprising a current packet of a plurality of packets of an epoch. Each handset transceiver has a receiver having a parallel correlator for generating timing error signals and end-of-packet signals for the signal, and a timing loop for receiving the timing error signals and for establishing symbol-level timing synchronization. An enable resynch gate of the receiver receives the end-of-packet signals from the parallel correlator to establish packet-level synchronization, and a de-packetizer of the receiver reads epoch location information from the current packet which identifies the location of the current packet within the epoch. A counter of the receiver receives the epoch location from the de-packetizer and establishes epoch-level synchronization.

Base to handset epoch synchronization in multi-line wireless telephone

A digital high definition television receiver equalizer system includes an input adaptive feed forward filter (FFF 20), a carrier recovery network (46), and a slicer (40) in addition to an adaptive decision feedback filter (DFF, 30) for removing intersymbol interference. At the beginning of a blind equalizing interval the FFF is not adapted and the DFF operates as a linear filter with adapted coefficients for equalizing post-ghosts. Afterwards in the blind interval the FFF coefficients are adapted blindly for equalizing pre-ghosts. In a subsequent decision-directed mode the slicer output is used for adapting both the FFF and DFF non-linearly.

Multi-mode equalizer in a digital video signal processing system

A blind multipath equalizer for a digital communication channel is disclosed. The equalizer includes a sparse digital filter, responsive to a source of a received signal including a digital data signal, and including a plurality of taps, each responsive to a tap coefficient and time displacement, which produces a multipath corrected digital output signal. A filter controller is responsive to the received signal for detecting a multipath signal by calculating the autocorrelation of the received signal, detecting a multipath signal based on the autocorrelation and supplying a tap coefficient and time displacement to one of the plurality of taps to cancel the detected multipath signal.

Blind multipath correction for digital communication channel

Compensation for offset errors caused by data truncation is accomplished by adding a compensation value to processed data in systems where the truncation stages are arranged in determinable configurations. More than one compensation value may be selected and applied. The selection of the appropriate value is determined by the number and type of truncation stages used in a given system configuration. The compensation value may be predetermined or measured.
