A trialkylphosphonium haloaluminate compound having a formula: where R, R, and Rare the same or different and each is independently selected from Cto Chydrocarbyl; and X is selected from F, Cl, Br, I, or combinations thereof is described. An ionic liquid catalyst composition incorporating the trialkylphosphonium haloaluminate compound, methods of making the trialkylphosphonium haloaluminate compound, and alkylation processes incorporating the trialkylphosphonium haloaluminate compound are also described.

Methods of preparing compounds according to Formula (I): and salts thereof as well as their corresponding phosphine intermediates are provided herein, wherein Rand Rare different and each of Rand Ris independently selected from an organic radical that branches at the alpha carbon and an organic radical that branches at the beta carbon, and each of X and Y is independently O or S, and wherein said compound is a liquid at room temperature.

The present invention provides phosphinic acids and their sulfur derivatives, in accordance with the following formula (I): wherein Rand Rare different and each of Rand Ris independently selected from an organic radical that branches at the alpha carbon and an organic radical that branches at the beta carbon, and each of X and Y is independently O or S, and wherein said compound is a liquid at room temperature. Compounds of formula (I) find utility for example as metal extractants. Also provided are methods for making compounds of formula (I) and their corresponding phosphine intermediates.
