An encoder for a wheel or other devices with relative movement comprises in the use of a printwheel, a linear Hall-effect sensor and magnet mounted in a non-ferrous metal shaft with a flux conducting spiral ring molded in the printwheel and encircling the shaft. The angular position of the printwheel is absolutely determined by the magnitude of the signal relative to the transition point of the spiral. The values are converted to digital information and stored in non-volatile memory for comparison to the values measured as the wheel is positioned during operation of the wheel. In another embodiment, a second Hall-effect sensor is placed on the shaft opposite the first sensor to provide an enhanced signal.

Hall effect encoder apparatus

An encoder for a wheel comprises a linear Hall-effect sensor and magnet mounted on a non-ferrous metal shaft. A ferrous metal ring having a toothed structure extending inward such that each tooth ends at a point on a spiral curve is molded into the printwheel encircling the shaft. The Hall-effect sensor output provides a determined output when each tooth is positioned over the sensor to enable an absolute position determination while the signal drop off between the teeth as the wheel is moved allows for counting the steps between settings for relative encoding and redundancy.

Hall effect printwheel encoder

A printwheel encoder comprises a non-ferrous shaft having a magnet strip and a flexible Hall-effect sensor arrangement affixed thereon. Molded printwheels including a flux conducting ring having an inner spiral surface are rotatably mounted on the shaft in respective juxtaposition to each Hall-effect sensor. The wheels are mounted adjacent to each other so that the rings form a nearly continuous flux conducting sheath which protects the Hall-effect sensors from external magnetic fields.

Printwheel and encoder assembly

The printwheel setting apparatus comprises a voice coil motor having a magnet reciprocating in a coil which magnet is connected by a flexible link to a picker link for advancing the printwheel. The picker link has a picker cam which cooperates with a cam stud to cause a tooth on the picker-link to engage a slot on the printwheel and to rotate the printwheel as the voice coil motor magnet moves to a position for again advancing the printwheel when the magnet moves in the opposite direction.

Postage meter printwheel setting apparatus

A voice coil motor assembly for a voice coil motor printwheel setting apparatus comprises a plate having the voice coil motor coils mounted thereon. The plate is adapted for attachment to a printed circuit board by pins electrically connected to the voice coils. Picker links having voice coil magnets connected thereto are stacked in sequence and the final assembly is completed by enshrouding the voice coil magnets with the voice coils mounted on the plate.

Postage meter voice coil motor printwheel setting assembly

An electronic postage meter has a communication port enabling communication between the postage meter and an external device for recharging an internal register of the postage meter. A manual control such as a button on the postage meter effects the application of dialing signals to the communication port. The manual control may effect the automatic dialing of a service center, for oral communication when a funding register in the postage meter has a value above a predetermined amount, and dialing signals of an accounting center to effect the recharging of the register when the register has a value stored down below the predetermined amount.

Postage meter communication system

An electronic postage meter system in which a postage meter is coupled to a data center by way of a communication path, to enable recharging of the accounting register of the postage meter under the control of the data center. The postage meter includes an arrangement for applying dialing signals to the communication path for initiating a request for recharging of the postage meter register, and for interrupting the communication prior to the receipt of recharging authorization. The data center is responsive to a request for recharging the postage meter register to apply dialing signals corresponding to the expected location of the postage meter to the communication path to re-establish communication for the transmission of recharging authorization signals. The interruption and subsequent re-establishment of communication verifies the continued location of the postage meter at the expected location.

Postage meter recharging system

The Voice/Text Storage System provides for the storage of digital data and digitized voice signals and is particularly suited for applications such as voice mail and voice annotation of text. The system includes a first bus operatively connecting a storage/network processor which controls access to a mass storage device, a host processor which provides overall control for the system and a communications processor. All processors have private memories connected to the processor CPU's directly so that the processors may continue to operate when the first bus is busy. The system also includes a second bus operatively connecting the storage/network processor, a voice transfer control unit, a buffer and voice transfer unit for receiving, digitizing and storing voice signals received over a plurality of telephone lines. The voice transfer unit also includes a switch and data carrier detection apparatus for selectively connecting digital data signals transmitted over the telephone lines to the communications processor.

Voice/text storage and retrieval system

New and improved apparatus is provided for the calibration and standardization of the analog output signal level of automated analysis equipment, which level varies as a function of the concentration of the constituent being analyzed. Such apparatus comprises an A/D converter including a dual-slope integrator for translating the output signal level to a time interval which varies as a function of the constituent. Such apparatus further includes means for generating the inverse function of the analytical function, which is applied to linearize and scale the output signal level and to convert such level directly to digital form. Also, provision is made for the calibration and standardization, on an individual basis, of each of a plurality of analytical channels in a multi-channel system.
